I recently tried switching to performance mode for more fps on WoW, however i noticed my cpu temps were very high(mid 80s-90c). I was running on balanced power setting before this and averaging 66c (these are all with stock cooler). When i switched back to Balance i noticed my temps were still extremely high when idle. I am not good with this stuff and not sure what to do. I am not oc'd. I switched to power saver mode and am in the mid 30c average idle. http://prntscr.com/cijebv this is my current idle on power saving. http://prntscr.com/cijep2 and this is balanced power setting idle. this all started happening this morning when i tried out performance.

The stock cooler is your problem. To tame the beast that is the 4790k, you require a aftermarket cooler. I know from personal experience using the I7 4790k. The temps on mine reached the very same temp range while gaming with the wimpy stock cooler. I switched to a Be Quiet Shadow Rock Slim and temps drop anywhere from 10-25 degrees cooler depending on the game.

I also forgot to mention under load I hit 100c on wow with balanced withing seconds (before I panicked and closed it). But on power saving I don't go over 40c.

I have a 212 evo. But I'm not very comfortable putting it on myself. So I'm waiting on a friend to come over and kind of guide me. I'm also still really worried why this only started today after I tried performance settings.

Well then, all you can do is wait till he helps you install that cooler. But that cooler should definitely help your CPU temps.

Is it still safe to play at least on power saving until he can come help me? I don't dare try balanced again until I get a new cooler on. I'm just hoping switching to performance didn't ruin something in that short time.
