Motherboard Supports Q6600 and Q6700 - What about Q9650???

Hello friends. Trying to do my brother a solid. His desktop has Core 2 Duo E6600 and I am trying to put the fastest processor in there that his motherboard can handle. I believe I already have my answer, but I wanted to clarify and ask for help.

His motherboard is a ASUS P5N32-E SLI
I went to the website and clicked on the "CPU SUPPORT" section and it looks like the support stops at the Q6700. Please have a look ---> https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5N32E_SLI/HelpDesk_CPU/

Couple of questions.

1) Can this board handle the Q9650?

2) If not, why? Please educate me if you have the time.

3) If the answer is no, which one should I shoot for? Fastest and safest/best for a little overclocking on air.

I did some initial research, and it looks like if I CAN'T choose a Q9650 I will have to either get the Core 2 Duo E8600, Q6700, or Core 2 Extreme QX6850

I can overclock them I suppose, and the prices are so cheap on ebay that it doesn't matter I guess, but which one makes the most sense at the end of the day?

My brother plays World of Warcraft and I'm just trying to breath life back into his rig. Over the years we've added a SSD, maxed out the ram, nice new video card, and now the processor. Not much I can do after this one, so again I express my appreciation for your help and look forward to your anticipated responses.

All the best!

If it's not listed, it's always a risk. Sometimes it works anyway, but sometimes it doesn't. Lots of CPU updates (there was a node shrink here) require motherboard/bios support, even on the same socket - in this case, the motherboard appears to support the Kentsfield C2Qs but not the Yorkfields that were released a year later.

It looks like the chipset doesn't support Yorkfield CPUs(latest core2 quads) even though it supports otherwise similiar late core2 duos.

Depending of the games you would play, E8500 or E8400 might be better, or on some games Q6700, specially overclocked. I would suggest Q6700. It might not be so good on some older games but overall it should be better.

Appreciate the feedback. I wonder if it makes sense to get the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and overclock it just a little? Looks like I can scoop one up for like 45 bucks on ebay, or a Q6700 for 30. Only like an 8% difference on stock settings, but with a little tweak it looks like the Core 2 Extreme QX6850
makes more sense?

Anyone care to weigh in on that?
