HI! I Want to ask more about M.2 disks.. I have MSI B150 PC MATE (Mobo) with Key M for M.2 (2280)
1. Is SSD desired for laptop compatible to desktop, if has same slot ?
2. Which slots are compatible with key M

Solution
Hey there, bimbaws.

There are 3 types of M.2 keys - B, M and B+M

Basically different keys have different number of pins and bandwidth lanes. The (2280) is the length and width of the drive (22mm wide and 80mm long) so that means that you should get an M key which is either 2280 or less in length (2230, 2242, 2260). Usually the larger the capacity - the longer the drive, as it needs more NAND chips.

And yes, as long as the slot says it's compatible for M.2 M-key (2280) it doesn't really matter if it's a laptop or a desktop computer's motherboard.

Here's some more info on the M.2 form factor...

Thanks, so that means if I try to put 2280 Key B and M to port M it wont be compatible, right?

It should.. but youre nut sure right? :D

Bad phrasing. :)

The B+M keys are compatible with both B and M sockets. However in some really rare cases there might be incompatibility issues with some motherboards (not because of connection problems) regarding the protocol compatibility. Since your motherboard has an M socket, the best option would be to go with an M-key drive. However that does not mean that a B+M key won't work. You'd best get in touch with the mobo manufacturer's customer support if you decide to go with a B+M key and see if the one you've chosen is fully compatible, just to be on the safe side.
