File Server vs Connecting to a PC?

I am a Video Editor, currently working from a couple of RAID drives for all my media in my Mac Pro, but more Macs are now being added to the office and I need to work out a central storage solution.

I have a spare PC at my disposal, so the idea is to make use of this, by either having the Macs connect to it to access its drives while it's just running standard Windows 7, or whether it's worth turning it into a dedicated file server, using something like FreeNAS or similar.

Can someone help explain the benefits of turning it into a file server? And is it worth sacrificing what could be a backup render machine for this? Or will just connecting to the PC (via ethernet) offer enough functionality for multiple video streams?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
It is better to leave that PC as rendering machine.
This PC is too powerful to be used as file server (wasting performance) and consumes too much power for a file server.
Just build/buy a special file server.

Hi guanyu, it has dual 6-core CPUs (not desperately powerful Xeon's), GTX 780 Ti, 32GB RAM and I have 8TB of storage to put in it.

Great, thanks for the advice.

So what would be the benefit of using file server over just being connected to a PC containing the drives?
