My old computer won't power up. I placed the hard disk into a Sata hard disk enclosure and though can see a new external drive with a number of folders I cannot see any of my usual folders or files. Not sure if it is a filesharing issue. Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

I believe you can use some data recovery tool, so you can scan the drive with it.
Another thing you can try is to access the drive, under a different OS. You can check the Ubuntu Live CD approach out. You will need a flash drive or a CD, which you can boot from: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode
