Hi everyone.
I'm attending a Computer Networking course and I'm currently coming up with a topic for my master's thesis.
I know my favorite topic within networking is security, so I was thinking it could involve something like VPNs.
What do you think would make an interesting VPN topic? What are the most current challenges/issues of VPN networking? Maybe I could elaborate on how to fix those issues.

Maybe a better topic on the security issue is the risk vpn have to companies when employees expose the internal networks to the internet by using vpn to bypass restrictions. How do you prevent vpn connections. How can you control user owned devices connected to the corporate network. What are the risks of not blocking vpn like loss of corporate data, malware infections and even hostile workplace lawsuits because someone was on NSFW sites and someone got offended by what they saw on someone elses screen.

If you research you will find a lot of information on this and why you can block most forms of vpn. But how do you block something like a cisco or juniper vpn appliance that is actually using ssl/vpn and load the client software...

Not really sure that topic is sufficient for a master's level thesis. Sounds like more of a project level document for a specific class.

How would you expand the topic or focus it to achieve the higher level of academic scrutiny? Have you bounced your thoughts off of any of your advisors/professors? If not, you should.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response.
I haven't yet spoken to any professors. I intend to, but I wanted to present them with a more concrete topic than "something involving VPNs"...
That's why I came here first! ;)

I'm still interested in network security in general. VPNs were just what came to mind first.

This type of information is widely scattered so your professors may accept a comprehensive document that includes. It depends what they are calling a thesis now days. They used to want original material so you would have to find some area that is not just a copy and paste of information you can find. Kinda like the guys that figured out that openvpn does not follow ssl correctly and can be detected.
