Why are some RX 480's more expensive than others?

I was browsing prices and found a range of 4GB RX 480's at different prices.
For example, The power cooler RX 480 Red dragon is £20 cheaper than the MSI RX 480, are people paying more for the brand or would there be a notable difference between the two?

Also, if Im aiming to play at 1080p 60hz would I benefit more from GTX 1060 OR RX 480 (4gb) and which aftermarket variant would be the best for either?

When it comes to AMD cards sapphire makes the best Coolers for them. They are quite, cool and fit in various form factors plus they arent price as high as as the competition

If you will be upgrading within 2 years go Nvidia or else stick with AMD, cause dx12 just plays better in team Red

The 1060 (6GB) currently performs better in DX11 games, whereas the RX480 appears to have an edge in DX12. I'd expect that gap to close shortly though. I'd suggest a GTX 1060 (a 6GB version, not a crippled 3GB) over an RX 480, but you can't go wrong with either.

As for why prices vary. There are reference vs non-reference designs, there as different cooling solutions etc.
Related more to nVidia cards - if you want to OC, some of the higher prices variants of the cards have more headroom for OCing and the better cooling solution will assist also.

AMD, it's a little less of a problem. Most AMD cards have minimal OC headroom anyway.

I'd ensure you don't pick up a reference/founders card regardless - but otherwise, there's no real difference to the 'average' user between brands/models.

I've heard the Nitro+ has not been very good on the RX 480 though?

Price range are affected by many factor. Including, but not limited to the cooling solution, better components, tax and this might sound odd, brands from which they came from.
Brands like ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte, to name some, are usually price their product a bit higher than the rest for different reasons. They usually do have one thing in common, longer warranty coverage than some less known brands.

Each and every variant of the same GPU, no matter the brands and cooling solution it came with or how high the OC they put to it, basically still perform more or less about the same ballpark.
Some might a little bit better performer than the others, some might tad bit cooler, some might even fare a bit better at overclocking. Though every one of them still has the same thing in common, much better build than the reference.

Considering everything above, get whatever cheaper and has better warranty coverage.

But gtx 1060 6gb starts from around 250$, with ones with better coolers at 275$, thats a lot more than the AMD card i mentioned. I dont think paying 40-70$ more is worth it for the about same performance overall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zLlf8E3Skg Here is a comparison. This seems to be a common trend for AMD cards, they always get better over time( cause the 3 year old r9 2xx series are still great performers, whereas Kepler has been laggin a bit behind)

Also, if I could get a EVGA GTX 970 for £25 or even £35 less than an RX 480 4GB would it be worth getting a 970?

Their cards have always been fantastic. Well after watching from several youtube vids, the sapphire card just has a better build quality overall + they run much cooler than several AIB cards.
