Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out the best setup for my needs and budget, with the main purpose of building a photoshop beast. My list so far:

i7 6700k
G.SKILL TridentZ Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3200
GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 Motherboard
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G
Corsair Hydro Series H100i GTX
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 80+ GOLD 750W Fully Modular
Phanteks Enthoo Pro Series ATX Full Tower
HGST 4TB Deskstar (backup storage)

Samsung 512GB 850 PRO
SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 256GB

What I'm not sure of is, whether I should get the SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 256GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 as a boot drive or if it would be better to get the 512GB version of it and use it as storage and a smaller 256gb sata-e samsung 850 pro as a boot drive.

Much of my work involves 1000's of 30-50mb files, and I regularly use photoshop to create panoramas of up to 5GB files.

Any input on if the faster boot or storage will be great, or any suggestions of the build in general!

Thanks!

I would get an X99 and 5820K -- 6 cores and quad channel RAM. I would also get an Nvidia 1070 over the 970. But that is just me.

Boot/program load speed is probably not as significant to your workflow as scratch speed. I would use the M2 for working buffer and a standard SATA for boot.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was thinking along the very same lines as you, but unfortunately I'm already at my budget limit, just can't swing it :( Also, I found the X99 motherboards at the lower end ($200) to be a bit too much of a compromise compared to the z170 at the same price. If I had another $400-500 I'd definitely go the X99 route.

As I'm a bit of a new comer to building computers, can you clarify for me please, are you suggesting to have 3 drives: a small dedicated drive as a buffer scratch drive, a boot drive, and a storage drive? I know this is probably a really simple, but a bit confusing for me at the moment!

Ok, thanks, so i will get maybe a 128gb m.2 ssd for the scratch, 256gb for boot and 500gb ssd for current work and a spin drive for everything else with an external for backup (I prefer my backup to be portable, in case of fire and theft). AlsonI'm thinking of getting a 1070 gtx now as there is such a big difference for not so much more money, lets see if i can find the extra cash! Thanks for all the advice, its really cleared things up! :)
