Generally speaking, the 'mainstream' HDDs from all the main brands are fairly interchangeable, with no real noticeable difference between say a WD drive, SeaGate, Samsung or Hitachi - with all other factors (rpm, cache etc) being equal.
Obviously that doesn't apply to every drive in their lineup, as you will see differences when you get to enthusiast/server grade levels.
There was some research on fail-rates on drives of 1TB and below (I'll try and find the link) and HGST came out a little ahead of the pack, for what it's worth. (HGST are a subsidiary of Western Digital).
Realistically, when looking for a consumer level HDD, ensure you're looking at a 7,200rpm drive with a minimum 64MB cache, and buy whichever brand is the cheapest.
