Can I use squeezable lip balm as a temporary TIM?

I will be receiving a Corsair H50 v1 soon and I have no thermal paste. Would using squeezable lip balm, like Carmex, work better than metal to metal contact?

Probably. Almost any goopy organic will do for a while. It may have adverse effects on the heat spreader and heat sink though. Chemicals can behave differently when heated.

What is preventing you from getting some thermal compound? Most big box stores carry it, and certainly any computer repair shop.

I've actually used copper anti-seize compound. It worked just fine on an A10-5700 which is a moderately hot (95w) chip.

You took a lot of chances with that, grease is petroleum based and could eat up on the insulation if leaked. Also, copper in that grease has much coarser particles than found in proper tim.

There were some tests done years ago with toothpaste, that showed it actually worked better than many high-end pastes available at the time... until it dried out 24 hours later.

I remember those tests, actually it was just a bit better than nothing but definitely better than mayo or chocolate.

Well, with the toothpaste you could at least use it as a polish to smooth the surface so that the mechanical fit was better....
