Hi

My specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit Pro
Motherboard: Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K <4.2GHz Quad LGA1151
GPU: Nvidia Asus GTX1070 8GB STRIX
RAM: DDR4-3200 32GB Corsair Vengeance XMP RAM (4 x 8GB DIMMs)

I have a feeling that some of my drivers are not installed correctly. Maybe Windows overrides some of the drivers with its own. I experience lag in games.

Is there a software that can help me identify drivers that need updating?

Or can someone please share some tricks on how to find the culprit?

I have installed as many drivers as I can find from here: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I have Win7/Win10 dual boot (with Win10 as my primary partition) and there is no lag in Win10

Do you have SSD/HDD combination or only HDD ? I am guessing that you have SSD considering a high-end PC.

Where you have installed your Windows 7 ? As you have not mentioned it in your question. If, your windows 10 is installed in SSD and your Windows 7 is installed on HDD , then you will experience some lag as HDD doesn't compare to SDD , when it comes to speed .

For best performance , Check your SATA configuration in BIOS is set to AHCI not IDE .

Check your graphics driver , if it is not latest then update them manually .

And yes , some drivers can also cause this type of issue . I would not recommend a driver updating software as majority are scams and contain malware .

Though you can try Intel Driver Update utility - http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html . This will not update all drivers but can update some of it.

OR you can install GeForce Experience Suite - http://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience to optimize your settings .

This could also be Nvidia driver issue as this type of issue in Win 7 is faced by many others who own this graphics card . There is a bug in driver for Win 7 which can impact latency . Nvidia will fix this issue in next driver update . Till then use Win 10 for your gaming needs .

Thank you for replying. I am running dual boot using EasyBCD. When in Win7, my drives are:

Win7 C: (1TB SSD Samsung 850 EVO)
DATA D: (3TB HDS 3000GB Seagate 7200RPM)
DVD E:
Win10 F: (500GB SSD Samsung 850 EVO)

When I am in Win10, the drive letters of C: and F: get swapped.

When in BIOS > Advanced > PCD Storage Configuration > SATA Mode Selection

...is set to "AHCI" as opposed to "RAID".

I have installed the latest drivers from Asus, Intel, Nvidia several times. The lag in games is weird. Sometimes it's smooth, other times I have mini freezes every few seconds. In Windows 10 it's just almost 100% smooth.

I already have Geforce Experience and already tried running that Intel utility which only suggested for my USB 3.0 drivers to be updated, which I did.

EDIT: When I open a game like WoW and press Win+D to show my desktop, my mouse cursor lags like mad. What could it be?

Sorry the late reply. My PSU is: PSU Seasonic SSP-650RT 80+ GOLD
But how can that be the culprit? As I said, there is no performance issue in Win10. Only in Win7.

Seems most likely graphics driver issue as i said. As your pc build is very good and your PSU - Seasonic SSP-650RT 80+ GOLD is good to handle the specs. So, try this below fix , if not tried already -

UNINSTALL EVERYTHING nvidia, then reinstall them fresh .

When installing , select Custom (Advanced) installation.

This forces the installer to install only the components that you want.

Use the checkboxes to install only the graphics driver and GeForce Experience, and

unchecking the boxes for the 3D Vision Controller, 3D Vision Driver, HD Audio Driver, and the PhsyX System Software.

If above doesn't work , then try unchecking HD Audio Driver Only and then install .

Then restart and check if you still have lag/shuttering issue in games in Win 7 .

Thanks. I just uninstalled Nvidia PhysX. So now I only have Nvidia Graphic Driver 372.70 and Nvidia GeForce Experience 2.11.4.1 (I don't have the other Nvidia things installed)

Here is the status so far:

Doom (2016): no lag. I run it with Vulcan API on everything maxed.

The Rise of Tomb Raider: almost no lag on everything maxed (only problem is slight screen tearing when looking around)

Dragon Age: Inquisition: almost no lag when running around, but when an ingame conversation cutscene is playing it starts to mini-freeze/stutter/lag

WoW: Legion: Not smooth at all. Especially when rotating the camera. I get a lot of mini stuttering even though I have 30+ fps most of the time. Earlier I tried alt tabbing (minimizing the game) when in character selection screen and my mouse cursor started lagging like mad. Sometimes when certain effect / spell is shown, it starts to lag badly. (EDIT: I tried lowering my settings in WoW to a minimum and I still get micro stutters. Not so much as on max settings, though. It looks a bit like screen tearing/ghosting (not sure about the terms) - like my monitor has horizontal lines and some parts of the screen are not synced with other parts. A bit hard to explain)

It is very weird given the fact that Doom is running smooth. What could it be?

Here is what is causing you this problems in games -

Is your hardware causing shutter or lag - Hell no , you got a high-end gaming build . So, that toss off any hardware related bottleneck.

Is your OS(Win 7 ) causing this issue - Again no.

Is your Graphics driver is causing all this -

Absolutely yes , though it is a hit or miss kinda situation some experience it some not but when you search this

type of issue on anywhere on the internet , you will find many more like you who are experiencing same kind of

issue with their drivers . Most of the problem is indirectly associated with HD Audio Driver which is bundled in the driver

package which randomly interferes with post frame processing due to some bug in win 7 which is unknown . Also ,

this issue only affect some games in win 7 and on Windows 10 it works flawless . And i can confirm it as i have

another PC with specs same as yours with one exception that i have only 16 GBs of RAM . I have Windows 10

Pro 64bit installed as primary OS . And all games which i have tried to run are as smooth as butter . The thing is

that Nvidia knows about the shuttering bug , it's all on their forum also but they haven't released a fix yet to

address this . Maybe they are phasing out driver development for Win 7 or maybe they are working on it (i'm not

sure?) and focusing only on Windows 10 . After all Windows 7 has it's main

support end on January 13, 2015 though users will continue to get security updates till 2020 .

So, my advise is if you have tried everything and still it doesn't seems to make a difference then stick with

Windows 10 for the games which don't run lag free in win 7 till there is any fix .

I 'll keep you posted as soon as i find any solution/fix for this.

UPDATE : Try some more general troubleshooting -

1. Go to Nvidia Control Panel(Right click on desktop and there should be an option for it)
2. Click on "Manage 3D Settings"
3. Under "Preferred Graphics processor" change the setting to "Use High Performance Nvidia Processor"

ANOTHER ONE -

Sometimes the PC thinks you only have a single CPU core, even when you have multiple cores. To fix this:
1. Go into your MSConfig program (start bar, search MSConfig).
2. You should have an option on the bottom called “selective startup”.
3. Make sure that the “Use Original Boot Configuration” is checked.
4. It will ask you to restart the computer. Let it restart
5. Try the game.

ANOTHER ONE-

1. in-game option --->disable supersamling---> disable vsync---->buffer count=1 (other option base on your taste)

2. Download Nvidia Inspector ----> "CREATE A NEW PROFILE" ---> add (Your game name here in short likeWow).exe into execute file

3. In Nvidia Inspector (Your game name here in short) profile(created in 2. ) ---> set vsync on/off here based on your need, then Max Prerender Frame set to 1 , power management type to "max performance" ---> click apply setting at the top right hand corner, done and run the game!

Hmm. So Nvidia are Microsoft's b#tches that refuse to make optimal drivers for Win7 which forces users on Win10...

Sounds logical. Although, I hope that there is a fix. I appreciate your replies and I hope you will get back asap with any possible solution (if there is any).

At least I know now, that I am not going crazy. I installed nearly every possible driver available and still got this problem. The irony is that an older game with relatively dated graphics (WoW) lags more on low settings that a new game on max settings (Doom). This is where the concept of logic collapses for me.

Personally, Win7 is my favorite OS and I wanna do everything I can to avoid Win10.

EDIT:

3. Under "Preferred Graphics processor" change the setting to "Use High Performance Nvidia Processor" <-- there is no such thing. I forced PCIE to be my primary GPU in the BIOS instead of Auto.

EDIT2: I just tried your suggestions. WoW still lags. I feel like I have 166MHz computer again with 4MB RAM.

EDIT3: I still keep wondering why my mouse lags and my mouse cursor flickers when alt tabbed from WoW. It's like the game is not using my hardware ressources optimally.

If 'Preferred Graphics processor' option is not there , then ignore it . It's basically for Desktop All-in-one , though i thought i 'll write it anyway for anyone other who is having same issue and may come across this thread.

Mouse lags - Yes, you are right . Not utilization of graphics resources optimally , guess what ? graphics driver issue :( .

Win 7 is mine all time favorite also . Though not tried to install it on my secondary pc , which is same as your's .

Will install Win 7 next day and also try to play Wow on it . Also , i will update you , if i face same sort of issue. That will prove that you are not only one who is having these issues.

http://imgur.com/a/TJYkK This is my current setup of drives. Meaning, my first connected drive is Win10 (SSD), and the second is Win7 (SSD) and then there is the big 3TB (HDD). Do you think the fact that my Win7 drive is secondary (but becomes "primary" using EasyBCD dual boot tool, hence becoming a C: drive) is slowing my system down?

Another thing I suspect is that Win7 is not using my 6700K CPU optimally
