My new FX 6300 processor has been overheating several times, and I didn't realize until my PC shutoff while I was monitoring the temps. Motherboard was at 98 C and CPU was around 85ish C. I turned off core turbo boost, took of the stock thermal paste on the stock heatsink and put some month old Arctic Silver 5 on the stock cooler. In the BIOS I set the Q-fan settings to turbo for max fan speed. i also underclocked the processor from 3.5GHZ to 3.23GHZ. Now under heavy load(playing Garry's Mod) the CPU fan rpm is at over 4000rpm and the cpu temperature is around 61 C, climbing up to around after around half an hour 65 C. Are these temps okay? Because if they are, I wonder why AMD would provide a cooler that could not sufficiently cool this CPU. This makes me angry because I'm a teenager and I want to save as much money as I can for college and getting this CPU was all I could afford, buying an aftermarket cooler seems like an unnecessary step, especially since I'm not doing any overclocking.

One rear case exhaust fan, the cpu fan and the psu fan. I dont have many fans but this setup was able to cool my previous Phenom II x4 9550 despite it being so much older.

Unfornanently that is a necessary step, the FX chips do run hot and without a good aftermarket cooler and thermall grease.
After 2 or 3 weeks it does get hot, if you really are tight on money the best you can do for now is this:

You can put this on the stock cooler it'll hold out for 3 months top but the tempature will go up steadily over time.

Think about it those 2 items will work, it'll allow you to over clock 4.0ghz if not better depending on your case cooling.
Ask your parents you need the money and tell them it is necessary so you can keep the computer going and play games on you off time.

"Motherboard was at 98 C" your case is boiling water(water boils at 100c)? this isn't your cpu temp but your case temp.

what program are you checking your temps with?

I recommend amd overdrive and/or CPUID as the more reliable programs. other programs can be wrong.
