Completely up to you. I have a GTX 1060 6gb model and it's a beauty. I haven't played or seen much games that really use vulkan or completely rely on DX12 so of course the 1060 will outperform, but games that do use it of course RX 480 outperforms. It depends on your budget as well and personal preferences. Depending if you're truly wanted to play games with vulkan and in DX12 get the RX 480. I don't see much games really using that so picking up the 1060 was the choice for me. So far I have no regrets at all.

Depends if more games start to support DX 12 but for some reason a lot of game devs aren't picking it up as fast as I thought they would since DX 12 was a pretty big deal when they first announced its release.

Yeah true. I just see a larger performance in the new Hitman(no surprise) and DOOM with vulcan but otherwise the 1060 will pull ahead.

Yea i wasnt really looking at 3gb cuz thats not enough to futureproof 1080p

They are both excellent cards for 1080p@60Hz.
I prefer nvidia since it runs cooler, overclocks better, on average performs better (regardless of the API) and has gfroce experience with shadowplay.
There is no future proofing since no one can tell the future. Definitely there will be some games that run better on RX 480 and some on GTX 1060.
If you are not fanboy - get the cheapest with good (non reference) cooler.

I would go with the gtx 1060 6gb. Go for one as close MSRP as possible gigabyte would be one to look at they all run great and the card boost over 1900mrhz on its own. I've been looking into these two cards my self. The 480 8gb does have two more gigabytes of VRAM but the GPU is weaker then the 1060. The 480 8gb is more expensive then the gtx 1060 I haven't seen any 480 8 GB cards for sale under $260 USD since they released and the reference ones sold out.

Reasons to choose a Rx 480 are if you want to use a freesync monitor or you want to cross fire later on.

Reasons to chose the 1060 are runs cooler, oc better, runs most games better.

Dx12 is not a factor in my mind because both these cards trade blows depending on the game. Volcan is what utilized in three games and not very well in one. I did some research on volcan and I don't feel like it's going to be a major factor. DX 12 will be the future it's backed by Microsoft they are going to push it they are the major player and they are pretty much going to decide what direction game development is going to move towards and thats dx12 that's just the cold hard truth imo.

Either way though out of these two you will probably still be upgrading in 4 to 6 years again max. Future proofing is hard thing to do its always in motion

honestly they are so close in performance that I would go for the cheapest of the two if I was on a budget.

preferences:
only RX480 I would get is the powercolor red devil version. high OCs and better temps.

with the 1060 you pretty much can choose any of the big players, Asus/Gigabyte/EVGA/MSI. they all get to the same freaking clock speeds anyways...
