USB3 external HDD GPT formatted not recognized in Win 10

I've seen numerous posts about folks having problems with external hard drives not being recognized, and have just encountered the problem myself. After doing a good bit of research I've created this table of results.

Device ```````` Win 7 ` Win 10

2TB HDD in USB2 `` Yes `` Yes

2TB HDD in USB3 `` Yes `` Yes

3 TB HDD in USB2 `` Yes `` Yes

3 TB HDD in USB3 `` Yes `` No

Now I emphasize the "No" in the lower right of this box. The 2 TB drive is formatted MBR, the 3 TB drive is formatted GPT (since it's over 2.2 TB). I believe this is the key to the problem. Notice also that Windows 7 does NOT have the problem whereas Windows 10 DOES. I've duplicated this on both my laptop and a desktop running Insider build 14915.

The Windows 10 problem exists on both the release build 14393.187 and insider build 14396.

I have to editorialize that as the old song said, if this is not a Windows bug, grits ain't groceries, eggs ain't poultry, and Mona Lisa was a man! ;)

Solution
Hi there wpgwpg,

This is a strange issue you've got over there.

Is the drive recognized by Disk Management and Device Manager and how? Does it require some kind of an action?

I assume you've updated your USB 3.0 drivers from your MOBO's website right? If you haven't, it would be a good start.

Cheers,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks for the feedback D_Know_WD. The drive isn't recognized by Disk Management. I've deleted the USB3 driver and rebooted with no change. I've checked with Dell for drivers, and there driver checker said what I have is the latest. My laptop is a 9 month old Dell Inspiron 5559 running Windows 10 Anniversary Update with all the latest updates. I've reproduced the problem on a 6 year old HP desktop with a PCIe USB3 card running Win 10 Insider build 14915. This HDD is recognized and works just fine on a 3.5 year old Dell Inspiron 660 desktop running Win 7. I'd say that pretty well zeros in on the problem unless I'm missing something not obvious to me.

OK, as of today my problem is resolved. I bought a new Inland enclosure, removed the Toshiba 3 TB drive from the old Inland enclosure, put it in the new one, and bingo, it works. It's strange that it worked in the old enclosure with Windows 7 on USB3 and Windows 10 on USB2, but maybe there was a microcode change in the enclosure I bought yesterday. Both enclosures look identical, so that's all I can think of to try to explain it. Whatever, the problem was with the old enclosure and not Windows 10.

I'll just add that now that re my OP post I don't know about the grits, eggs, and Mona Lisa! ;) I've seen things with USB3 and Bluetooth both that I can only say sure seem strange to me. Thanks again D_Know_WD.

Heh, I didn't know if the new enclosure would fix the problem, but I figured it was worth $20 to satisfy my curiosity if it didn't do anything else. I tell folks if you don't like occasional mystery and change, stay away from computers. :)
