At my university we're using Centos7 for coding, and I would like to add this to my laptop. I don't want to do a dual boot as I'm not going to be doing assignments on it, I just want to be able to practice coding on the fly. I currently have 8Gb of RAM installed on my laptop, how much do I need to run a VM Linux distribution? It has an i7-4510U CPU.

Solution
If you want to set up a virtual machine, or a virtual os environment.

8gb should be fine.

You can always configure how much system memory a virtual machine or Os running on it can use out of your main system memory when you first set it up, or you should be able too.

Obviously the more system memory you have the better, but since your only going to be using one virtual machine 8Gb should be fine, any more than two or three VM`s and I would say 16Gb of system memory.
