GTX 760 Diminishing Performance

Hey Tom's Hardware,

I've been having issues with my rig as of late, somewhat unusual problems that aren't being fixed with a simple update of a driver. I'm at a loss of what to do at this point, I feel like I've tried everything except completely wiping the OS and starting fresh.

First off, specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 @3.20GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 760
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Seagate 1T and SSD Crucial 238 GB (CT256MX)
PSU: Thermaltake SMART 550W 80+
MoBo: MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate ATX LGA1150
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case
OS: Win 10

Here's my description of what's happening: Startup is fine, able to log in and interact with OS. At first when a game is launched it runs okay, performance is alright but definitely not what it was a couple days ago. After 10 or so minutes the frame rate drops to about 20-30 FPS and sometimes drops even further to 3 or 4 FPS. Other times the game will freeze completely, as well as the OS, unable to close programs I have to force the computer to shut off by holding down the power button. If I am able to close the game, the OS will continue to run poorly, taking a minute or two just to show a new frame, such as the start menu opening.

I've updated my 760 drivers about 5 times, rolling back to the 3 previous releases and still nothing changes. So far I've tested WoW, Overwatch, Far Cry 4, and Rocket League. Rocket League was the only game that didn't cause frame and performance issues, but it may not have been long enough for it to take place. The other three start the issues within 10 minutes of launching and running around doing stuff.

I've said this in a previous thread but maybe it's a RAM issue? Doesn't seem like a leak, but I'm not an expert. I'm really hoping this is all software based and not a component I need to replace, would really suck dropping $400 on a new card or something.

At the very least CognitiveComposure.

Open the side of your system case up and verify that the fan on the graphics card is spinning.

Turn the power off on your system.

Remove the GTX 760 card, as they are quite old cards now, and have a check for any dust build up.

Particularly if the GTX card you have is of the Nvidia reference design that uses the single blower type fan setup on the card for cooling it.

If the case what tends to happen is that you get a thick matted dust layer that sits over the front cooling vents of the cooling solution of the card just behind the blower type fan on the card.

To clean it, or check it.
It will entail removing the fan cover and plastic shroud on the card to get access to the point mentioned to...

For sure, idle was 32C and in an Overwatch match it was at 56C. Not sure if this helps but it appears to be completely random when it wants to crash and burn, just did that match totally fine, frames were as they should be and all. Very frustrating, I don't know what is causing my comp to do this.

The frame drop is often due to a lack of cold air not passing from the fan to, and along the cooling solution fitted to the Gpu of the GTX 760 card you have.

If you clean it you should find the frame rate drops down to 20fps ect stop happening.

And the card may also run much cooler in temps CognitiveComposure. So it really is worth checking if the card has never been cleaned, and has been used for a few years.

Thank you for the response, I should have clarified that I have the Asus Model. I checked the fans and confirmed they are still spinning, no signs of dust build up either...

Those were the GPU temps, apologizes I should have said that in the first place.

It appears that the GPU temps when the computer crashes are still around 56C, and the CPU temps being 52C-ish. It's becoming harder and harder to view the tempuratures, often I can't even tab out of a game/program, even in a windowed setting.

Seems like a memory leak then. Either the game has a memory leak or your RAM is not working properly.

What is your RAM usage when gaming?

There are some programs to test RAM on the internet also but I haven't used any in ages so have no recommendations there...

Ahh okay, so tabbing out still isn't the best way to measure temps...

So I ran some of the tests, Prime95 gave me no errors and no warning but I didn't run it for that long, only like 5 minutes cause I have no idea how long to run it for.
Furmark gave me a score of 2526(42FPS, 60,000ms) with max gpu temp hitting 69C and at a resolution of 1920x1080.
ChrystalDisk says my HDD and SSD are in Good status.
As for 3D mark I would prefer not to spend $40, if it really comes down to it and I absolutely have to use it then I will but thats a last resort.

Okay, I ran 3D mark and got 1702, Graphics score got 1582 and CPU score got 2998. ( http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/14985004 )

Prime ran smallfft for 10 mins and got no errors or warnings.
Couldn't find which burn-in you were talking about though. There's a CPU burn-in, is that what you meant?
Checking memtest now...

Alright, as far as temps go during prime my highest temp was 88C. Memtest game me no errors.

Kind of at a loss here, I still have no clue what's causing the crashes and why, leaning towards just wiping the SSD and starting with a fresh install of win10. It doesn't seem like it's a hardware problem.
 
88°C are way to high (if you really ran the prime version 26.6, newer version of this tool will raise the temp. and therefore are not comparable). About 70°C at max. would be OK.

Check the cooler installation and reapply thermal paste ("pea" method). Dot in the middle of 5mm in diameter of the CPUand install the cooler on it.

Update BIOS of the motherboard via M-Flash inside BIOS itself, not in windows!
