Is an OS already on a brand new hard drive?

Hello, I have recently bought parts to build a new computer from scratch. I haven't gotten al the parts yet to put it together is why I am asking. I was wondering if by buying a brand new 1tb solid state drive from the company Newegg, would it come with the OS already on it or would I have to buy it separately. If it does not, is there a way I can transfer my Windows 10 to my new computer? It is on a laptop. Thanks in advance.

Hey there, Blueboa96.

You can't buy a drive with a pre-installed OS on it. It doesn't matter if it's an HDD or an SSD. This is because the OS is configured for the particular hardware of the system which is used for the installation.
Unfortunately, due to the same reason, you won't be able to use the Win 10 OS of your laptop, for your new build. Both computers have different motherboards and a fresh install will be needed for your new build.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

If the product key is for a retail version of Windows 10, he can use it and go ahead wit ha fresh install by following this tutorial: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html.
However, if this is a Windows 10 which is an upgrade from an older OEM version of Windows (came with the laptop pre-installed), this will not be possible. OEM software is meant to be used only with the device/computer it came with.

Alright, thanks for the fast response. I understand what you mean and it does make sense after thinking about it. And in response to your other message, I did in fact buy a laptop with it pre-installed. So hopefully I can find a cheap Windows 7 and upgrade it to 10.

The free Windows 10 upgrades are done, and a Windows license that is not shady is the same cost or more than a Windows 10 license. So just go get a Win 10 license to begin with.
