How to add external wifi card to a mini-itx motherboard?

I found a good mini-ITX motherboard for the LGA 1150 socket that I want to upgrade to from Gigabyte: The Gigabyte GA-H81N INTEL LGA1150 H81 Mini-ITX Motherboard. It has a mini-PCIE slot for wifi but my desktop wifi card (TP-Link) is fixed and doesn't fit lying on its side like for mini-ITX. I was thinking of using my Optical Disk Drive bay to hold the wifi card if I modded it slightly. I have the Fractal Design Core 500. This means I would have my wifi card sticking out the front so I might actually get slightly better reception. I would then use a mini-PCIE riser cable to connect it to the mobo and then screw it in place to the ODD cage/bay. Would that work? Or should I have it sticking out the side sitting on my desk on a small docking station? Many thanks in advance!! :)

I have one but I am at college and it doesn't work with USB Wifi cards. Only works with internal ones for some reason. I recently moved from a large desktop PC to a small form factor Mini-ITX system hence I can only have one expansion card. Don't really wanna buy one cause I bought so many and none work on this network. Don't wanna do anything to mess up the network either.
