Is an i5 6600k + GTX 1070 Windforce + 16 gb ram be "future proof"? (On 1080p monitor, max settings, on some of the latest games) What would degrade a system 's performance (apart from clutter on hdd)?

Thanks!

Is an i5 6600k + GTX 1070 Windforce + 16 gb ram be "future proof"? kinda yes. You made good decisions: 16GB RAM now is a good decision for the future. likewise getting already the strong gtx1070. Put some money in a uptodate Z170 mobo w/ all features and SLI support would be a future-thinking decision too: you will be able to enjoy all skylake platform including fast-storage options and another gpu in the future. Get already a strong cpu cooler for your future overclock too. Most important put money in a high quality 850W psu for the future upgrade.

That depends on you, do you demand max settings 1440p 144fps in every game? Then not very long. Do you play on 480p sd tv and don't care about graphics and framerate? Then probably over a decade. You will find most people on this forum hate the word "future proof" because there is no such thing, how long a computer will last for you is up to you and the rate at which technology progresses. So what do you plan to use this pc for? If its for gaming what games at what settings?

it will keep you for at least 2-3 years BUT there is no notion as futtutr proof because today you might play everygame in 1440p geting over 80 fps and after a month a game will be realeased and you wont be even abel to run it 1080p 60fps constant so this is a very subjective question....

Future proofing a build depends on what your going to use it for really.

If you demand the highest settings at 1440p then the build will only last 2 maybe 3 years but if you stuck at 1080p you could maybe even get 4 years out of it.

I have a i7 4790K and my GTX 970 is still doing totally fine at 1080p, the only game I have to put to high settings is Witcher 3. Currently playing Dying Light maxed 60fps vysnced no issues.

To round up 1080p will last longer due to lower pixel count compared to 1440p.

To run games at max and get future proof build here is what needed.

Future proof:
1080p= GTX1070(SLI) or GTX1080
1440p= GTX1080(SLI) or TITAN X PASCAL(OC to limit)
2160p= TITAN X PASCAL(SLI)

I would say get GTX1070 now and add another GTX1070 for SLI down the lane as per the requirement. If you could get GTX1080 and push it to limit it will also be good choice. Both of them will provide you 60fps at high to ultra settings in games at 1080p for nearly 4years. If you wanna go for single card configuration try going for GTX1080 instead of GTX1070.
