My motherboard broke, wonder if I should upgrade

Hello.

I'm hoping I can find some feedback here.
I have an old i5 2500K CPU, 14 GB of RAM, and a broken motherboard.
To get a decent replacement motherboard to work with my CPU and RAM would cost like $150, and I'm thinking that if I have to be spending so much, it might make sense to just get a newer motherboard and CPU. I had no problems with my computer before the motherboard broke, but I may as well upgrade now if I'm getting a new motherboard, anyway.
I use my computer mostly for audio software, some graphical applications, and I have occasionally pushed the hardware but I'm generally not impatient, so when it stalls I'm not going on a rage.
So I guess I'm not sure if I should be considering an upgrade now, or just a replacement.
Any insights?
Thanks.

It's already been almost 10 days since I posted this?
...
Well, darn, I thought maybe it was 2. Well, anyway, I'll say now, I'm thinking since I already have a case, a power supply, and a tolerable graphics card that I could handle around $400.

That looks like it's probably a good choice. But I have to wonder, because I do a crazy lot of multi-tasking, if the i7-4790K, with the hyper-threading, would be worthwhile. And I had some fun once messing with source code on Linux, but my previous computer at a couple points left me waiting like a half hour just to compile something like a paint program.

I can probably make it fit into the budget.
I can come up with a few ways to use extra power if I have it, I'm sure.
I'll probably try a search engine again to look for information, but they come up with a whole lot of information about gaming systems and not much else.

Well, thanks Mr. Tradesman, for answering at all.
