how to update an M5A97-R2.0 bios

sorry i'm a noob to bios updating but how do I update the bios to that motherboard, planning to get a gtx 1070 and afraid the current bios I have on the computer may not work with it

Unless the BIOS update specifically states that it resolves a VGA issue, there is no need to update the BIOS. If it does state so, then the ASUS web site will provide very detailed instructions on updating the BIOS. Follow these instructions to the letter. Any deviation may result in a bricked motherboard. This is why we say never update your BIOS unless absolutely necessary.

There are 19 BIOS updates for that motherboard. You might want to skip a few or update to the latest one.

A common mistake made is failing to decompress the downloaded BIOS file. This often leads to erasing the current BIOS and having an unusable file to flash the BIOS with.

There are several methods used to flash the BIOS to choose from. Flashing within a Windows environment is the most risky. I would suggest using USB BIOS Flashback or EZ Flash 2

1)note what the manual says to rename the file to (do not flash .zip files or other compressed files)
2)note the picture in the manual of USB BIOS Flashback Port

1) use USB 2.0 port not USB 3.0 port

The manual can be downloaded from the Drivers & Tools menu. It was not available under the Manual & Documents Tab for me.
