Personally I have been using a 500GB Seagate USB3.0 external HDD. Hasn't given me any issues in the 6 years I have owned it.

To help you narrow your choice down, there are three factors to consider.

1. Capacity - how much storage do you want?
2. Interface - USB, eSATA?
3. Cost - how much are you willing to spend?

I'm using a WD 1TB elements USB 3.0 drive. It's been fine for over two years now. Windows treats it like any other drive when it is connected to a USB port. Windows should treat any drive connected to a USB port or eSATA like it does any internal drive.

BTW, neither WD or Seagate sucks. We all just develop strong personal preferences over the years based on our experience. I have had very good luck with WD, so I stick to them.

I believe that Rocstor is known for durability. I tried to buy one once, but it never arrived. I'm currently using a G-DRIVE mobile 1TB. It is very well regarded as far as USB drives go.

You never have to worry about relying on proprietary software. HDD manufacturers often supply backup utilities on their consumer drives, but these are purely optional, and you still have to mount the drive and browse to the installer, as on any drive, to use them.

Yes, the included files have full permissions, so you can delete them as mcnumpty23 stated. Also, I know that my copy of the software will not run under Win10, so there might be compatibility issues anyway.

Yes, you can do drag-and-drop, copy-paste, the Copy to / Move to operations, whichever. I don't know if the software has been updated, but it's a USB drive, so compatibility is not really an issue.
