Was it a scam? Help asap thanks

My dad told me that he called iobit to activate the software and they told him our internet was 95 percent infected if it gets to 100 we will lose all connection. He said they are based in china. He gave them 500 dollars. I think it's a scam personally.

You... you can't infect purely a data line. You can infect a machine that is within the network to do something malicious, but you either A) need to leave your firewall off or B) watch a bit too much eh... yknow, without running anything like Kaspersky/Malwarebytes etc. If I'm wrong, someone else please correct me, but it sounds like a crock a crap.

On what grounds was your father calling them?

he said they gave him this number 844 201 1952 and it wqas microsoft tech. they also downloaded a strange anti malware thing called super anti malware he also said they ran iobit but i think it was to think he was getting help.

You mean the same "microsoft tech"s that have the spam pages on somewhere like Ad-Fly? That's not actually Microsoft. Also, that phone number belongs to Eureka24, which also apparently houses the website "supportyourpcnow.com". Ain't a microsoft tech.

"they gave him this number"; How did they first get in touch?

okay they said they are from blah company and are certified microsoft techs and a worm compromised our internet and even if we change
ips it doesn't stop the infection.

Who called who?
Did they initiate, or did you (or dad) see a popup on the screen, saying YOU ARE INFECTED!! CALL 1-800-StealMyMoney...

In any case, scam.
The question now is...what else did they do? It would have been quite easy to plant a trojan or other malware.

Yes it is. Get your father off the line, and get the machine they are on off of the internet. Either find your router, and rip all of the cords out of the back of it or power it down, or do the same exact thing to the machine.

Right now, you have literal criminals in your house. Reading your banking info, looking through your mom's jewelry drawer, etc, etc.

Either you can let them continue, and actually steal money from your bank account, or you can kick them out.

Walk over, and take the power cord out of the wall. Or turn off the WiFi. Or unplug the LAN cable.

Do this now. The next thing I want to see you type is that the PC in question is completely offline.
