Do I really need a 1070?

I will be assembling my first rig within the next two months and I'm confused with which GPU to buy. I'd be glad if y'all could help me out narrow down my options.

This will be my typical configuration.

I'm really confused about which GPU to go in for. I'll definitely be importing from the states coz prices here are exorbitant; to the tune of ~$360 for a Zotac 1060 Amp.

And since I will be importing, my options are limited to EVGA as only they offer Global Warranty and I don't want to be shipping to the USA for an RMA.
I can either buy an GTX 1060 or a GTX 1070. Now, obviously you're going to say go for the 1070, but hear me out. I will only be gaming 1080p/60Hz for the near forseeable future and for the beginning, I'll be playing the games I've missed like the Battlefield series, Crysis (all), Call of Duty, Bioshock, Portal, Far Cry etc. My top area of concern here, is the prices.

A GTX 1060 in India, as I mentioned is around 24k. While if I get it imported, I get it for $260 (~17000). Also, for the 1070, which retails for around $430 (on Newegg) is equivalent to about 28k INR. So should I really spend the extra 4k and get the 1070, or is it overkill for my build?

Solution

Yeah for 1080P I wouldn't get anything more than a 1060 at the moment. Pretty much any of the EVGA ACX cards are good - you can't go wrong with any of them.
Need more information. What Hz and resolution are you going to be using? Will your monitor have g-sync or freesync? What's the rest of the pc build? Do you have to run games at max setting or are you happy with medium/high/very high?

All of these things plus budget will help decide what is best for you, everyone's requirements are different.

Understand that even if you import from the US, you will still need to pay taxes and import duties which will essentially wipe out any potential savings. Having said that, no, you do not need to purchase a GTX1070. Nice to have? Absolutely. Necessary? Not in the least. If you're willing to turn down some settings, the GTX1060 will easily play any game on the market today.

Don't use the GAMMAX 300, go for the GAMMAX 400 at least if you want some OC out of your i5k.
And that Corsair CX is trash tier PSU for that build.

If you're sacrificing these two part for budget toward the GTX1070 then I'd say it's not worth it. Pick the GTX 1060 and put more money toward those two items would ensure yourself a healthier and more stable PC.

For example: Seasonic M12II 750W : INR 9,300+125 Delivery @ Amazon India. This PSU would support future SLI capable card.
SEASONIC S12II-620W : INR 6,750+125 Delivery @ Amazon India This would support any i5+single GPU config.

One of my friends will be coming in December so he'll be getting it for me as a gift so taxes and duties will be taken care of. And I'm not in a hurry, so should I wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to get the 1070 cheaper or the 1060 even cheaper?

Nono, I'm not sacrificing them for the budget. I do realise I need a 500W+ PSU, I overlooked it. I just chose that CPU Cooler because it was cheap and a lot of reviewers said it was quiet and gave decent temps. All set aside, I'm just curious about whether is it worth going in for the 1070 or is it overkill.

Yep, I'll be getting a 550-600W PSU no issues. I overlooked it as my build list contained a 1060 previously.
I just wanted opinions about any possible limitations of going with the 1060 as opposed to the 1070.

The definition of "overkill" here would apply to what monitor resolution is being used. A 1060 will handle 1080P flawlessly and will be even pretty adequate at 1440P. The 1070 will handle 1080P, 1440P, and will also be pretty adequate at 4K and VR should you decide to go that route.

Well, it's going to be 1080p/60Hz (not even 120/144Hz) for quite a while (about 2-3 years at least). So I guess 1060 is the way to go then. And while we're on that topic, would you also recommend which one to put my money on? Pls choose one from the EVGA lineup coz Global Warranty and do they OC well?

1060 vs 1070?
If you are on 1080p 60Hz, 1060 is already ok but not really future-proof, since 1060 struggle a bit already with Games like Witcher 3 at all maxed out and everything is activated. You can however deactivate hairworks and leave everything to max and 1060 will no issues at all.
On 1440p, 1060 is still acceptable and considered as budget solution.

1070 is better and more future-proof but could be a wee bit an overkil for 1080p today. Unless you have really enough cash for that, I would stick with 1060 or RX480.
