I am technically a Klutz so I rely on online resources like Tom's to figure things out.

I have two computers - both had a Geforce gtx 550 TI installed and worked properly. The drivers are up to date. Neither is overclocked.
The first has Win XP installed 32 bit with a six core amd processor and 4 gb memory - I use it for older games. It has a 650 w psu.
The second has Win 10 64 bit 8 core amd processor and 16 gb memory. It has a 430 w psu. I want to use that for newer games that require better frame rates etc.

When I attempted to upgrade the win 10 computer the brand new gtx 950 did not boot into windows and I could not access the bios. After a time I tried the gtx 950 in the Win XP computer and it worked fine. I put the 550 back in the Win 10 and it worked fine.

Based on threads I found here on Tom's I suspected the power supply was not large enough on the Win 10 computer to run the 950. However I have also read here the 550 TI uses 120 watts when fully active but the 950 only uses 90 watts.

I do have a brand new EVGA 500 W psu I bought as a backup - but based on the wattage used can this be the problem? Or should I look at something else first.?

Solution
you can reset the bios by taking out the CMOS Battery and re-inserting it after 5-10 secs (Disconnect the power supply or turn it off), or if there is a clr-cmos jumper, just short them out with a screwdriver, after doing this, see if the PC boots with the GPU installed, if not, take out the GPU, reset bios again and boot.. enter bios and select PCI-e as the primary display output, then save and exit.. press the power button when its booting up, this will power off the CPU and then re-insert the GPU, if there is not display then, it will be confirmed that the mobo is not compatible

Yes I think your answer is the right one notea - but unfortunately this is a Acer Aspire M3450 desktop - as far as I have been able to see from reading it is a bastard bios that will not allow you to change the bios by accessing it - I have come across some things about changing the setting from within win 10 but it's not clear to me if or how that can be done and I've spend hours here and on the Acer and Microsoft websites trying to follow it. Do you or anyone else know of any way and can provide a link?

Thanks Jefferdo - that newest bios update P01.A4 is the one I already had installed when I bought the computer - but it does not provide access so far as I can tell - and the machine came with windows 7 which I used to go to 10 just before the offer expired

Guys - I can't get a solid identification on the Acer motherborad in the M3450 - it seems to be some sort of bastard configuration of their own. In any case it is the only major component that I have not upgraded or replaced in the computer at this point.

I am considering getting this motherboard which has pretty good reviews and is still sold to replace it

As you can see from the last line it does have the UEFI bios that Notea refers to and therefore should be compatible with the GTX 950 card. I already anticipate I may have to get a new case if I do this and that Microsoft will scream "counterfeit software" when I change it - which it is not.

I have never been happy with the acer since I bought it anyway - but is there any other major issues I may encounter doing this change?

Not possible to access anything to reset in that bastard motherboard Notea - as far as I can determine (see conversations above after your original answer.) The GTX 550 TI I am using in their goes in the same PCIE slot as the 950 that I am trying to use - so I think it is already set as the primary display output.

also re this older motherboards doesnt support EFI Bios and the 950 uses EFI Bios, so you will have to enable legacy support in bios.. not really sure how its set in your bios though

Does that apply to both the HDMI output and the DVI as well?
