Hi All,

I have a WD Sentinel DX4000 Storage server configured with RAID 5 which act as network and Iscsi, It shows STORAGE DEGRADED message and BACKUP FAILED message. The 4th drive bay light is not ON ( its not showing blue/red..where as 1 to 3 bays is blue colour. The light near power button is blinking red.

In the console it shows hard drive not present in drive bay 4.

So I'm confused whether it's problem with the hard drive or hard drive slot?

Solution
Hey there, @hardtech!

According to your description, I'm afraid that the 4th HDD in your RAID 5 array has failed, which is why you get the message of Storage Degraded. I believe that this particular 4th hard drive has most probably failed and you should replace it. You can also check the hard drive status through the WD Sentinel Dashboard. I'd suggest taking the failed HDD out of the bay and checking its warranty here. (As long as it's a WD hard drive)
If it's still covered, you should be able to get a replacement from our Customer Support, once you send your RMA request to them. Once you get the replacement, you shouldn't face any issues re-building the RAID 5 configuration. RAID 5 volumes have the...

If it's still covered, you should be able to get a replacement from our Customer Support, once you send your RMA request to them. Once you get the replacement, you shouldn't face any issues re-building the RAID 5 configuration. RAID 5 volumes have the information striped across all of the drives in the array, saving some space for parity blocks throughout all drives to help rebuild data that is lost from any single drive failure. If you have the Auto-Rebuild option turned on, the RAID should immediately start rebuilding itself after putting the identical replacement HDD.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi hardtech & everyone else,

I have the exact same issue. I've removed the drive and tested it in another machine and it is working just fine.
Are there any troubleshooting ideas I can try to confirm the controller is fried? Is replacing the whole NAS my only option for repair?
I have confirmed the the NAS and drive are out of warranty.

hardtech, did you ever resolve your issue?

Dirk

I'm sorry to hear about this WD Sentinel NAS issue, @Dirk! :(
However, you have done a great job by troubleshooting the HDD from another system. But I'd still recommend you try using a different HDD in your NAS to see if it will get detected. Can you also provide more details about the NAS model and what kind of storage configuration you have. Are you able to access the NAS dashboard and check the storage status from there?

Keep me posted with the details! I hope I will be able to help out!

Hi SuperSoph_WD,

Thanks for the super fast reply. It is a Sentinel DX4000 with 4x 3TB disks in raid5.
I can still access the NAS dashboard and it shows hard drive 'not present' in drive bay 4.

The 4th drive bay light is not ON (its not showing blue/red..where as 1 to 3 bays is blue.

Hey there again, @Dirk!

Maybe you should try swapping the places of the HDDs inside your WD Sentinel DX4000. If the RAID 5 pops up properly and it's working again, even with one of the other 3 HDDs connected to that 4th bay, then the issue is most probably the HDD itself. You mentioned that you have tested your 4th HDD in another system, right? I'd recommend you try running the QUICK & EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics and determine what is the health and SMART status of that hard drive.

Let me know how it goes.

Blast from the past.... Trying to revive my Sentinel.

Swopping drives showed that a bay does seem to be at fault. Bay 4 still shows 'Not present', even with a working drive from bay 3 in it.
I have run the WD recovery and reinstalled the whole system and bay 4 still does not work. I'm guessing it is a hardware problem with the RAID controller.
Is it possible to repair / replace the controller only or should I just get a new NAS?
