Hi,

My laptop certainly is not the best when it comes to gaming. However I have played many games on my system by reducing graphics, resolution etc. and increasing the frame rate. Some of the high end games which I have played on my laptop include Assassins Creed series all the way up to the Black Flag ( I cannot play later ones like Rogue and Unity since my card does not support DirectX 11), I did not play these games by maxing out graphics but finding the right balance between visuals and performance. And so far for the past 3 years I haven't had any issues.

But since two weeks ago, all my games have started lagging pretty badly especially Skyrim, Mass Effect and NFS:The Run. The trouble started overnight and the first indication was the length of time it took for the games' main menus to load. Skyrim for example takes a long amount of time for the main menu to display being stuck on the Logo/Symbol for a long time. Mass Effect is the same takes a long time to load and the game is very choppy. The Run is the same as well.

The thing is all these games worked fine and I progressed a lot in them. For example Skyrim I have been playing for about 3 years without any issues (I play Vanilla version without any Mods). So below are a list of things I did trying to fix this issue.

-Reinstalled all the games (didn't work)
-Removed the saved games started fresh (didn't work)
-Reduced graphics to minimum such as resolution to 640 x 480 (didn't work)
-Did a full system scan using Panda Antivirus and Malwarebytes (didn't work)
-Disabled both Firewall and Antivirus (didn't work)
-Freed up Hard disk drive space (didn't work)
-Restored the system to a previous point. Unfortunately the only restore point available was 2 days ago (didn't work)
-Used command prompt and tried sfc scannow. no issues were found (didn't work)
-Used CCleaner and cleaned all temporary internet files and what not (didn't work)
-Tried updating drivers (graphics etc). Already up to date. (didn't work)
-When to system settings and adjusted to best performance reducing all animations etc. (didn't work)
-Took the laptop to a tech store and did a full service cleaning all the fans and replacing thermal paste. Laptop runs fine no over heating around 55C to 65C idle and 75C to 80C when gaming (didn't work)
-Used Windows memory Diagnostic Tool to check the RAM. No issues found (didn't work)

Now I'm really stumped :( I don't know what to do. The only thing I can't do is reinstall windows ( I'm using Windows 7 Service pack 1 64-bit) because it would cause me to lose a lot of info and preferences some of which cannot be replaced and since the rest of the system functions are working without issue, I really don't feel like going to the trouble of reinstalling only to end up having to spend months getting the system to the level I need.

My system specs are

Processor: Intel Pentium CPU B940 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
Ram: 4.00 GB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics
Operating System: Windows 7 64 bit

The most crazy part is there are random times in which the games stop lagging. But they're very few and far in-between and have no particular pattern they just seem to work and after restarting they usually revert back to lagging.

Can someone please help me. Cuz I don't know what else to do anymore. Please :(

Huh, I might be reaching here but have you tried a hard disk defrag? Increased loading times and somewhat intermittent lag almost sounds like your laptop is having trouble reading data from the HDD to RAM fast enough.

Thanks I'll try that and see. *feeling hopeful*

Hm, okay. Can you try installing MSI Afterburner and running the OSD (On Screen Display) and take a look at what your CPU & GPU stats are while you are in-game. Temp, load, clock speed...etc.
It might also be good to do memory test (RAM) and a hard drive speed test.

hmm OK its working for NFS:The Run but doesn't work for Mass Effect or Skyrim. The frame rate for NFS is around 4-5 FPS which is very low. GPU usage is around 30% - 50% (is that low?). GPU memory around 400 MB (out of 1024). RAM around 3500 MB (out of 4 GB) CPU usage both cores around 90%. VID usage is 0%. So...um what does that tell you?

However The Program does not show any values not even zero (grayed out as if they're not available like I need to unlock them or something?) for Core Voltage, Core Clock, Shader clock, Memory clock, Fan speed. If you have any suggestions they're most welcome.

You may have to add those games to the OSD manually, there is an icon for it in the dock.

What you are describing sounds like a bad bottleneck. 90%+ CPU usage and "low" 30-50% GPU usage indicates that the CPU is working at maximum capacity and can't deliver data to the GPU fast enough for it to give you a good framerate. What's weird is I've never heard of that happening with an integrated GPU before. And weird that it started happening all the sudden too..huh.

Hmmm okay...the next thing I'd try is download Prime95, it is a CPU stress test program. And also download OpenHardware Monitor. Run Prime95 and post take screenshots from OpenHardware as the stress test is running. Then post them here.

It seems more and more that the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU. Increasing the graphics and resolution giving more work for the GPU did in fact improve FPS but only for a while. And I still can't access the main menu of Skyrim as for NFS GPU usage goes from 60% to 0% with the CPU usage at 100%. So what can be done :( ?

Huh yeah your CPU looks fine in OpenHW, albeit a little warm... But it is pulling the full 2GHz on both cores and not throttling.

To be completely honest...it's rarely worth the time trying to get modern games to run properly on 5-yr old laptop hardware that wasn't great to begin with. The Pentium is by no means a gaming CPU, especially not the laptop version, and same goes for the Intel HD Graphics GPU. I'd save some money up and get a proper desktop PC. But I know that is easier said than done...

Yes I understand what you mean, But considering my current circumstances buying a new rig is kinda out of the question. I have to save up cash for other things which is the main reason why I'm trying to get this problem fixed somehow. Do you have anymore suggestions? Like how to reduce bottlenecking for instance? or should I just take it to a tech store and try and get it fixed ?

In general, the only way to reduce bottlenecking is by either buying a more powerful CPU, which is not possible in a laptop, or by overclocking the existing CPU, which is also usually not possible in a laptop. But then again, the fact that you say it was working fine before makes me think it still might be something else that is the issue. Even if it looks like bottleneck.
I am out of ideas though, somebody else will have to chip in here.
