I'm looking at buying a new motherboard and a big deciding factor for me is RAID capability.

I currently use an SAS card that is a hardware RAID card. But it's slow and doesn't support memory modules so I can't/shouldn't enable write caching. Ive been thinking about upgrading to the Dell H710 from the H200. But given I need a new motherboard and that some support RAID I thought id look into it.

I'm looking at budget motherboards. Some support RAID but I'm struggling to learn if they are generally software RAID or hardware RAID. Also, what about write caching? Does the system RAM serve as a RAID write cache or are there particular motherboards for that?

The board i'm looking at right now is the Asus H170M-Plus.

Thanks

What kind of RAID are you looking into? Unless it's RAID 0, I wouldn't recommend a built in RAID from a budget motherboard. If you want to have some sort of redundancy but are not willing to spend much on a proper RAID card, I'd suggest you look into FreeNAS with ZFS?

You might save yourself from some headaches.

Primarily, RAID 1 for the 250gb drives I use for my files. Right now I do use RAID 0 on two 60gb SSDs... not so much because of the RAID, more because I need 120gb for my Windows install and programs.

I haven't priced up an even cheaper board and a second hand H710 yet. It might work out best. The H200 that I own now seems to dislike my 2.5" WD 250gb drives so I'm kinda done with it and don't want to keep it.
