Hi all, looking for some advice please. I have a question related to two seperate issues. My current rig (really old, 1st or 2nd gen intel core cpu/amd 4800? I think from memmory) has died in some way. I suspect the psu, as it WAS running when i went out but when I returned a few hours later, nothing. So I need a new psu. However, I'm finally going to upgrade (yay

Modern GPUs and CPUs don't need as much power as they once did. For instance, both those cards you mention would work fine on a 500W PSU. But it more about the quality of the PSU and its +12V rail...

Sorry, wasn't clear. Need to replace the psu for my current rig so that i can get on with stuff, but want to be able to use it when I upgrade aswell. Don't see the point of buying 2x neew psu in a few months. Not sure what will be in the new system, depends how new kit performs. I'm unlikely to be over clocking any kit I buy. If I were to upgrade now, I'd probably go dow the route of an i5 cpu and either a rx480 or 1060 gpu. Have just been given a new 1440p monitor, so whatever happens, the kit needs to be capable of powering that.

But it more about the quality of the PSU and its +12V rail than simply the total wattage. If I were you, I'd look into a Seasonic; one of if not the best. Next I'd select one that gave me some added headroom in case you need more power in the future (because Seasonics last a long time).
This model is one of the best and is semi-modular for clean installations: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151118
