Backup two Mac's to one external hard drive?

Let me begin by saying that I don't know anything about backing up computers. Seriously, I am clueless. I was going to upgrade my Mac's (one Macbook Air with 128GB and one iMac with 1TB) to OS Sierra but I need to backup first. I have printed some instructions of how to do so but my first question comes down to needing to purchase an external hard drive.

I want to see if I can put both of the backups on one external hard drive. I have spent days researching this and believe that I can but I don't know what capacity to get. I don't use the computers to store any files. The only thing that I have on one of them is some pictures that I don't care if I lose because I have printed hard copies. I don't have any apps or files of any sort and don't really keep a lot on my home computers anyway. I am just looking for something so I can do a backup of the computers in case something happens when I install the new operating system.

Obviously I am going to need a portable option so I can move it from computer to computer. I know that they cannot be backed up at the same time and plan to only backup each computer maybe weekly.

Any help that anyone can offer me would be so greatly appreciated and please break it down in the simplest terms possible for me. I feel like the lady at the garage talking to the mechanic here :) I have found great advice on this site in the past lurking so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Well, if both systems would be fully stuffed with data, you have a max of 1.3 TB of data. So get a 2 TB external drive. You should be doing backups all along not just before you upgrade the operating systems, what if the hard drive fails tomorrow? If you don't store any files on them, a backup won't help you too much, unless you do a full disk one so you can just restore the full system. Don't know what you'd use for that on a MAC though.
