Installed new 1070, now PC won't boot with it or my old card

I recently purchased a Gigabyte GTX 1070 to replace a Zotac GTX 970 whose fans stopped spinning. It arrived in the mail today.

I took out the GTX 760 I had been using in the interim and put in the GTX 1070. It wouldn't boot. My PC has an Acer motherboard and so it has an Acer splash screen during boot-up. With the 1070, it would stay stuck on this splash screen for upwards of 10 minutes. I decided to try putting the 760 back in and uninstalling my graphics drivers to see if that would work. This one time, the 760 worked and I was able to clean my old drivers. I don't know if this is pertinent information, but when I booted up with the 760 Windows installed some updates.

After that I shut down my PC and put the new 1070 back in. Nothing. I tried reseating the card, unplugging and replugging the power connectors, my DVI cable, then my HDMI cable. Nothing. I removed the 1070 and put the 760 back in only to discover that now my 760 won't advance past the Acer splash screen. I can no longer use my computer.

I'm using an Acer Predator desktop with a Windows 10, CPU is an i7-4770, a 550w PSU, and 16 GB RAM. The machine beeps once on startup but unless I'm mistaken, it always did that.

I have no clue what's going on. My only two wild guesses are that it's something to do with the Windows update or something to do with the power connectors. I only say that because I've never had a GPU that required an 8-pin connector. My PSU cable had two 6-pin connectors and one little 2-pin connector. I figured that I could use the 6-pin and the 2-pin in conjunction but maybe I was wrong? I did some googling and it seemed to me like I was in the clear but who knows.

Any help would be appreciated, I want to get back to Overwatch! Thanks.

EDIT: Forgot to add that all fans inside my PC are spinning nicely. PSU, CPU, and the fans on both video cards.

By chance, I recently replaced a GTX760 with a GTX1070. Thank goodness I didn't have these problems.

You can indeed use the 6+2 pin connection to power the card. Lots of PSUs have the PCIe power cable configured like that so that you can use it on either type of connection on a video card, so should be fine there.

Doubtful that this is anything to do with OS or update; you never get so far as booting the OS from your description.

One beep should mean that the system is completing POST ok.

You don't mention whether you tried to get into the bios when the splash screen came on. I'll guess that you did and failed. I think I would try resetting the BIOS. There should be a jumper on the mobo for that.

I actually did manage to get into the BIOS but I didn't see anything that I thought might help me. I was also able to access the boot menu but the only option there is for a Boot Manager (or something along those lines) and that just leads me to the same freeze on the splash screen.

I also just removed my RAM and put one stick back in. I remember that helped me with a boot issue years ago, but not this time unfortunately.

Do you still recommend resetting the bios?

I wonder if the Windows update got corrupted somehow when I tried booting with the 1070. I can't imagine why. I didn't know I had updates waiting to install after a reboot. If I did, I'd have sorted that out before putting in the new card.
