You mentioned that the external is recognized in Disk Management, right? So how does it appear there? Can you share a screenshot?
I'd also advise you to go to Device manager and try to resolve the issue by
uninstalling & reinstalling the external HDD as a device. Upon reboot, it should automatically reinstall itself and, hopefully, get properly detected. I'd also recommend checking you have performed
this cumulative update for Windows 10 as well.
If you haven't done this already, check how the external drive appears on another computer as well. If you don't have access to one, check your USB hub controller drivers after the Windows Update, I'd also advise you to manually reinstall them from the motherboard/computer manufacturer's official website.
