Is it worth buying a third party router?

I have a BT Home Hub 5 router provided with their broadband and recently the connection has dribbled and has been dreadful, where a week back I was getting 45 Down 18 Up on my phone. Now I can barley get any signal. So I browsed Amazon looking for any options and I came across the TP-LINK AC750. I was wondering, if I buy this will it increase speeds and distance? Or am I better off staying with the Home Hub? Coincidentally BT have recently released a new router... Is this their marketing technique? To reduce speeds to persuade you to invest in their new 'amazing' and 'fastest speeds ever' router?

Can use any router you want, there should be no discretion there. Just have your ISP details handy because you'll have to enter those fields again into the new router to regain internet connection. Login/password/ip addresses etc. Theres no harm in using another router even if let them know over the phone. The IT bloke would understand lol and if you need their help they will if you're stuck with the new router.

Routers age overtime, so hopefully a new router will speed things up again.

You should definitely but a 3rd party router. I was given a super cheap Aztech router by my ISP, and it sucks big time. I can't even utilize the speed that I'm paying for. I bought a TP-Link router instead, it works great now!

"Routers age over time" as does everything mate. The Home Hub 5 is BTs newest router with wireless AC, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the hardware, suggesting buying a new one is a waste of money, he should talk to BT.

I've had a few go on me after a few years and some even shorter some longer. Routers don't have much in cooling them selves so to suggest because your router has been fine for however long, doesn't mean all are the same. All depends on build quality and if you got a Monday or Friday router.
