Hello there
I want to buy the as rock x99 extreme 4 motherboard with the xeon E5 2680v4 cpu (bios update needed )
But
I wanted to know about the ecc compatibility , asrock's website only mention that ecc is supported with xeon cpus, what about this kit:

Crucial 32GB DDR4 ECC CL17 2400MHz (CT4K8G4RFD824A) (Kit 4 x 8192)

Is there a compatibility issue?
Is it true that I can use "normal" ram too ?

Thanks a lot
Lef

Solution
You need the ecc un-buffered/RDIMM memory RAM, like CT8026960 or CT6204203, for that MB if you will use the Xeon cpu. The CT4K8G4RFD824A is not compatible. You can use the Crucial Advisor tool to find the RAM.
If you want use the normal ram (non-ecc), and you can't use the xeon E5 2680v4 on that MB.
Here is from asrock site:
- Supports DDR4 3000+(OC)*/2933(OC)/2800(OC)/2400(OC)/2133 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Supports non-ECC RDIMM (Registered DIMM)
- Supports DDR4 ECC, un-buffered memory/RDIMM with Intel® Xeon® processors E5 series in the LGA 2011-3 Socket

And you are better to have the back up plan, because the E5 2680v4 needs 3.30 version BIOS at least, if the MB does not have it, you will need other cpu to update...

Otherwise may find the local PC shop, or the seller to see they will update the BIOS for you or not.

Thank you very much for your feedback !
Much appreciated!!
With the bios update you mentioned ,this is the only way ? I thought that with the first boot I could update the bios with a USB stick or something via the bios setup(never tried to update a bios before so forgive my ignorance )

Thanks again !
