Recently built this computer for a 3D graphics animator who is reporting after about a week of use that it was randomly switching off (not shutting down). He was using After Effects when this was happening and it would just switch off while he was rendering. I had him check OpenHardwareMonitor for any temperature issues and it appeared everything was comfortably below 60C while he was animating.
I had him check to be sure the main power lead going into the back of the machine was tightly secured, check the temperatures of the CPU/GPU in OpenHardwareMonitor, I had him check the PSU fan was working fine and that the PSU wasn't overheating.
I've asked him to try his RAM in a different slot just in case. I'm not sure if the issue has recurred since last night yet.
I had an EVGA P2 650W purchased and returned the G2 as I believed the G2 may be faulty. I ran Furmark stress testing on this for an hour and the GPU reached 75C at its highest. The rest of the components also all stayed under this according the OpenHardwareMonitor. We tested rendering a few videos and there were no issues. I gave him back the PC and we believed that was it. Unfortunately a day later he called again to say its back to shutting down right when he's rendering in After Effects.
Legitimately am stuck here with no idea how to go about fixing it. Had him try the GPU in the other PCI lane and same story.
Could a driver/software issue between Windows 10 and After Effects with this GPU be causing the machine to crash and shutdown? Could the GPU itself be faulty? What other troubleshooting steps should I try?
**UPDATE** Got this PC back off him two days ago and have been troubleshooting since. Any further suggestions recommended. Here's what I've done:
* Clean install of Windows 7, installed GPU and After Effects- still having the same issue.
* Ran Prime95 stress test which caused the PC to shut off after two seconds, same as with After Effects
* Tried my own GPU in the machine- Sapphire R9 390. This had the exact same results as the Quadro K5200 which leads me to conclude it isn't a faulty GPU (thank god).
* Ran memtest86 over night and after 5.5 hours testing returned zero errors, so we can rule out RAM.
**Correct me if I'm wrong** but I believe this essentially leaves it down to three possible issues:
* The CPU is faulty (any suggestions on how to test this please)
*The Motherboard is faulty (don't know how to troubleshoot this either)
* The PSU isn't a high enough wattage- even though most sites suggest this build shouldn't draw more than 420W and the PSU is a Titanium rated 650W. I have plans to borrow a 750W from a friend to test this theory too.
All parts were brand new apart from the Quadro which was taken from a prebuilt machine and resold (not sure if it was used previously, was told it hadn't been)
**ABSOLUTELY ANY ADDITIONAL HELP IS MASSIVELY APPRECIATED, FEEL LIKE I'M GETTING CLOSE TO FIGURING THIS ONE OUT AND JUST NEED A SECOND OPINION ON FURTHER TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS**
Please let me know if there is any further information or screenshots I can post to help
