I was hoping some of you could weigh in on the value of RAID vs JBOD?

I am shopping for an entry level tower server, and settled on a model that was discontinued by the manufacturer just recently. I can still buy new servers on Amazon though. There is one version with a RAID controller and another without hardware RAID, and I am trying to choose between the two. The one with the raid controller is actually over $100 cheaper, but I actually prefer JBOD with intermittent offline backup over RAID. Maybe I am jaded by my personal experience, but by far the largest data loss that I ever had occurred due to human error that got propagated into my backups before I caught it. Therefore, I like the idea of having offline backup that lags 1-2 months behind. Should I look beyond my personal bias and just go with RAID?

Solution
Just because it comes with a RAID controller doesn't mean you have to use it. Many RAID cards support JBOD; even if this particular one doesn't, you can just use the SATA ports from the motherboard. Unless there is something else lacking from the server with RAID, just get the cheaper one.

Thanks. Most RAID cards do in fact support JBOD as you said. I found the manual for the one being sold with this system and it did not however support JBOD. Using the SATA ports on the motherboard is a good option in general, but there are more bays in the server than SATA ports, so you have to add a storage controller to use them all. In the end, I found a system for sale at the best price without a RAID card, and I just bought a SAS adapter separately.
