I current have the following graphics card,

EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0

And I have bought the following graphics card for upgrade,

Zotac GTX 1080 Amp Extreme

Other than the time I built my PC this is the first time doing any major work on it and would like to know the process of changing the GPU and what I'll need to install/uninstall to get everything in working order. Another concern is if my i7-4790k will still get the job done for this or if I should look into upgrading that as well at some point soon.

Solution
You will need to upgrade the new drivers for the new video card.

Your i7 is one of the 2 strongest cpus on the market for gaming. It'll be fine for YEARS.
Usually on the back of your case you'll find the video card mounted into the case by a screw
You'll also see wires running into the video card and they end at a plastic plug bit.

Unplug the plugs so that it's free, then unscrew it and pull the tab on the slot and get it out.

Basically do the same process in reverse for the new one ; put it in the slot firmly but gently and mount it in, then insert the plugs.

Find the right drivers and you're ready to go. Many tutorials online for this.

As for your CPU, it doesn't perform too much worse than present day 6700k. (Probably around 10 percent if I had to guess)
The only problems with it ; RAM Speeds, temperature (not major if it's been holding up well so far) and such. I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the great responses to everyone. As for the bolded that's my only worry. I built the rig myself so I know what the physical process is, but I just need to know how to get the drivers and such. Also, I'll need to physically turn off the PSU and unplug correct? I intend to upgrade my CPU later on, but it's not happening any time soon unless the GPU demands for gaming and other usual tasks really require it.
