I am looking into buying gtx 980Ti Asus Strix (hopefully for some decent OC) or one of the aftermarket versions of gtx 1070. However i am limited to a 600w PSU and a tight budget as a student. Here in UK new 1070s are priced at about 380£ to about 425£ on some pricier versions (492-544USD), while i as a student am able to get 20% off amazon warehouse deals and therefore gtx 980Ti Asus Strix with minor packaging damage costs me about 325£ (421USD). I would like to get some opinions as to what should I buy in this case (does the extra 2gb of vram, better power efficiency and some other features justify buying 1070). CPU is I5 4690k (which i also plan to OC)

Gaming will be done on a 1440p monitor

The difference in performance you'll get from the 1070 compared to the 980ti, in my opinion, is hardly notable, and not worth the extra price in your case. We're talking about a 5% difference in benchmark scores between the two cards, favoring the 1070. For an extra 50 quid, the 1070's performance does not match its premium... but there's a catch.

You mentioned you'll be using a 600W PSU and that you don't know what that PSU's specs are. To me, this is a bit of a red flag.

The 980ti has a minimum recommended PSU wattage of 600 (TDP of 250W). 600W will give you practically 0 overclocking headroom. As a university student, overclocking is your best friend. This leaves me leaning towards the 1070 (TDP of 150W), even if it costs...

600w is more than enough for either assuming it's a quality psu. Unfortunately, there are no quality psus rated for exactly 600w. Which model is it?

Oh yeah and the 1070 is a lot better, but if the 980ti happens to be considerably cheaper, it is still a good choice.

I can't really specify the model nor even the manufacturer of my psu as of now because its being transported to my new accommodation. But i will be able to know that on Sunday.

The 980ti is cheaper but i am unsure about how much will i be able to oc it with my psu (after doing research i have found that OCed 980ti strix can be faster than 1070 but if it will require new psu its not worth it). The 1070 on the other hand is more effcient and i think wouldn't be a problem to oc. However the price is quite hefty and i wonder if i should try to wait for black friday sales.

You mean I'll need new psu if i OC 980Ti? Or that i would need to upgrade it with OC'ed gtx 1070 as well?

If you are gaming on plain 1080p/60Hz, the 1070 is really wasted, overkill performance and overkill price. The 980ti would be a better option as it'll still max out any game I can think of, and is cheaper. I'd only think the 1070 would be better if you are pushing 1440p, especially 144Hz

What kinds of games will you play, and at what resolution.
GTX980ti and GTX1070 are only one tier apart on tom's hierarchy list.

You may well find that a GTX980ti at stock will play anything you want at 1440P reasonably well.
Any OC you get will be a bonus.

I would not worry much about vram unless you are doing skyrim mods or such.

Any 1-2 years old and upcoming AAA titles tbh. Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Battlefield 1, GTA V and so on (1440p and maxed out preferably )

So I'd say the 1070 is the favorable option, because you'll get more out of the card relative to what you pay than if you were to buy a 980ti, since power efficiency has improved so much from the 9xx series to the 1xxx series.
