Hello,

Getting desperate on fixing this PC's random crashes. I've tried just about every solution I've found on this site, so I thought I'd post a new question.

Current build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Ly34pb

Problem: Computer will lock up and must be hard reset if any more than 1 (4GB) stick of RAM is installed. When lock-ups can occur:
  • • Any stage of boot
    • Within BIOS
    • After successfully running Windows 10 for around 2 hours (although the system rarely gets this far.)
Explored Solutions:
  • • Every RAM stick works fine when placed in any/every RAM slot, but only when it is the lone RAM stick.
    • All sticks have passed MEMtest.
    • Reset BIOS/Cleared CMOS multiple times.
    • Tried boosting RAM voltage by +.05 and +.06 as well as NB voltage by +.06.
    • Tried setting RAM timings manually as well as automatically
    • Updated BIOS using ASUS Flashback to most current version (twice out of desperation)
    • Tried an entirely different set of RAM (2 kits of paired HyperX Fury 4GB, 1.5v, 1600 sticks for a total of 16GB, each worked individually as well)
Notes:
  • • CPU seated properly (no bent pins)
    • RAM seated properly and sockets cleaned
    • After resetting BIOS/clearing CMOS the system will fail to POST a few times and must be hard reset two to three times. Each of the first few boot attempts will stop and a different red LED will glow solid until the system is reset. Typically, the first LED is DRAM_LED, then CPU_LED, next either BOOTDEVICE_LED or PCIEX16_1 where the GPU is installed. After a few restarts following a BIOS reset, the system will POST. (This note strikes me as the most bizarre behavior. Not ruling out a failing MOBO)

Update:

Here is more background information I received from the owner of the machine:

"I upgraded the ram first, buying two sticks of 4gb and then another two sticks of the same type. It worked fine so I never tested anything. I upgraded my processor next, but the system kept freezing. I upgraded the BIOS and made tweaks to it based on guidance in other forums. This did not solve the issue. I thought I had damaged my motherboard in the process of installing my heat sink, so I bought an identical motherboard. This did not solve the issue. I then exchanged my new CPU and installed an identical replacement with the same results - freezing at random times. Next, I ordered a slightly less powerful CPU and installed it. This did not solve the issue. At various points in this process, I clean reinstalled windows 10 twice.

First original processor: Phenom II X6 1090T Black 3.2GHz 6-Core

Note: the system worked fine with the above processor installed. The issues started with new cpus.

Second processor: AMD FX-8370 4.0 GHz (4.3 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ FD8370FRHKBOX Desktop

Third: AMD FX-8300 Vishera 8-Core 3.3 GHz Socket AM3+ 95W FD8300WMHKBOX Desktop

Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory"

Solution
Is there any chance that you got thermal paste or dust in the CPU socket when you switched processors the first time? Did you ever have a chance to put the Phenom II back in to see if it would work again with 4 sticks?
