If I only use the computer for gaming, surfing the net, streaming video, downloading/watching movies, using MS Office (and nothing else)

Is the G3258 going to have a performance increase to the Phenom X4 overclocked to 3.5ghz, or am I going to see a drop in performance or general windows sluggishness?

Do modern games do better with 4 slower cores vs 2 faster ones?

Solution

If you play cpu bound games like mmo's who prefer few stronger cores,i bet the g3258 is a good choice, otherwise most of the games would not run ok even if the pentium is overclocked.

My guess is that a slower quadcore runs better than a faster dualcore at most games.

Never going to upgrade this. This is only a 'guest' computer to tide us over for 6mo (until Zen/Kabylake is released), then it gets donated and my I7 becomes the guest pc. Its strcitly a matter of which one performs better now.

Honestly, I much prefer my G3258 over my 965BE (stock speeds). Most games wont use more than two cores from my perspective, granted I don't game much these days... But my G3258 handles Diablo III, SC2, Sacred2, Borderlands, SimCity, C&C4, No Mans Sky, Portal 2, and so on just fine. Compared to my 965BE, it's a heck of an energy saver in multiple ways... AC doesn't have to run as much to keep the area cool, and I don't suck down as much power for the CPU.

People seem to hate the G3258, but it IS one heck of a workhorse for a budget system if you don't plan on getting the absolute best of the best in a game in terms of performance.

I have only seen mine struggle when it comes to transferring large files (Several GB to Hundreds of GB worth in data) over the network while trying to game at the same time... Gotta love cheap NIC offloading to the CPU. :(

Also, I actually feel the G3258 is more efficient in win10 than my 965... Not sure that it is, just feels more... spiffy? Certainly not a major hit in performance if there is one though.

It's a tough decision, I have a dead Phenom mobo And I have a spare z97 board (1pcie slot, 1ram slot dead but otherwise great). New am2+ mobo and a G3258 both exactly $50. I guess I have to research her specific games.

yeah, its decided, Im getting the intel, faster chipset, +USB 3, much faster Sata, less power cost (plus Im running a dual PSU setup, I can take the second power supply out of the case and use the 5" drive slots for a DVD drive, plus Ill get to overclock a muliplier locked chip, always a fun challenge.

The dual core will obviously have much better single core performance but I think games than can use 4cores will suffer more than dual core games will benefit.
Besides, wifey always have a movie or something playing on the second monitor, that might not work so well with the dual core.

If it's a dual monitor setup, depending on what GPU you have, as well as software, a lot of the tasks may be offloaded to the GPU for video. That aside, I would go for the 860 if there will be a fair amount of multi-threaded things going on, or lots of multitasking.

But, keep this in mind, the 860 is very similar to the Phenom II X4 at 3.4Ghz (965BE), in performance, but can't be overclocked. It also consumes just a little more power (like 3w or so). But if you are needing the most performance out of what you have listed, the 860 should be fine for most things.

The 860 is still strong, has much better multithread perfomance than the phenom and destroys the pentium as a 4c8t cpu,the pentium has higher single core perfomance which can be higher with a mild overclock but except that its 2 cores are a serious bottleneck on anything more than simple usage.

So i think the i7 860 is more balanced.
