Hi guys,

So, I just bought myself a new PC. These are the specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake 3,2GHz
MB: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming
RAM: Crucial DDR4 2133MHz 8gb set
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6gb Strix Gaming
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120M

Now I want to overclock this (trying to pass 4000mhz), but any changes I do in the BIOS gives me a black screen when rebooting, then a message telling me the overclock failed. I have the latest BIOS for my MB (1904) and I've tried to follow several guides, with no luck at all.

I'm a total newbie to todays CPU's and MB's and my last PC was a LGA775 Core2Duo CPU.

What am I doing wrong? Why wont any higher frequency-value make my system boot normaly?

Solution
The non-K Intel CPUs are not meant to be overclocked (this includes the i5 6500). With Z170 some manufacturers made UEFIs that supported "unofficial overclocking", but there you have no guarantee you can even get 1MHz above stock. These features have since been removed as well because Intel does not approve of this.

tl;dr If you want functional overclocking you need an i5 6600k.

Ok. Then I will return my 6500 and get the 6600K.
Thank you so much!
