Hey all,

I'm in the market to upgrade my video card.

I do more video editing/rendering than gaming. When I do game it's mainly older legacy games like Sim City 4, Sim City 5, The stronghold series there's others but fall into that group.

I've been strictly a Geforce guy, but now looking to get into a card that has more power for video work. Which I've read that Radeon is the player in this category. How true that is is beyond me.

Right now I have a Geforce 430 with 1gig mem..

I've been looking and can't decide if Radeon or Geforce is better at rendering in Vegas Pro 12

I've been looking at the Radeon 480 with 4gig or the Geforce 1060 with 4gig. I might be able to go to the 8gig model if I can find a good price for it.

I've heard that 4 gig is the limit pretty much for rendering. Don't know how true that is though.

So which card is better and is 4gig plenty or would 8gig make a big difference?

Right now my rendering takes about an hour and a half for a DVD video or about 4 hours for a blue-ray. How much of a difference in rendering time will I see with either model and mem. configuration?

I'm running Win 7 64 bit with 16gig of memory, I5 at 3.5ghz. Samsung 750 for a boot drive and a 2- WD Black 1tb for storage.

TIA

Hi, 1st of all on Nvidia side the 1060 is only made in 2 variants, 3GB and 6GB, as on AMD side the Rx 480 come also in 2 variants but 4GB and 8GB.

IMO you should only have to decide to go either with the Rx 480 8GB or the 1060 6GB, i would go for the best deal you can find where u live.

I have a Strix 480 8GB because here the 1060's are +60/70€ more, and (again IMO) i think the 480 is better than the 1060, if i had the € i would got a 1070 but i think they are way overpriced.

8Gb of Vram is not really Needed I don't think hes going to be rendering a 4K [HD] 260Fps Video. Btw Upgrade tp WIndows 10 or 8.1 It has Better stability

The only reason for going with the 8 gig model is it comes with a backplate, the 4 gig model doesn't. The backplate sure helps for heat dissipation. If the 4 gig model came with a backplate installed I would go with it.

As for Win 10 been there done that had nothing but trouble with it. Besides there is way to much bloatware on it. Win 7 runs perfect.
