Hey,

So.. I've got a bit of an odd situation. My brother has been using my old laptop to access the internet. He bought his new computer and didn't get a wireless adapter, and so he uses my laptop via ethernet for internet.. Not pretty, but it works.

With his new computer, he's lost all of his games he'd downloaded (His old drive failed). I've got a lot of the games he plays, however I do not have a USB big enough to transfer them. I have an external drive, but it's hard and barely works. I remember I managed to transfer files using Homegroup's file sharing, and I was going to do that to give him bigger games to spare our internet the trouble, however for some reason, the way he access the internet is blocking it (I'm guessing, but I'm near 95% sure this is the issue). The laptop he uses can connect to the homegroup, but he can't. I can ping his local IP, but I can't ping his computer name.. I've got very little knowledge. I really want to be able to transfer these files by the homegroup, but his computer (Or rather, internet sharing) doesn't like me.

Any help appreciated, I'll keep throwing myself at it until I realise there is no hope.. =P

Still not sure that I am following the setup.

However, each laptop must be on the network as a individual device with its own IP address. Then files on one computer can be shared with another computer via a shared folder and the necessary access rights.

If Laptop #1 is on the wirelessly on the network and Laptop #2 is plugged into the ethernet port of the Laptop #1 (#2) then you are creating a bridge (Bridge Connections). Do not believe that that is what you wish to do.

See this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridging_(networking)

If his laptop is completely unable to join the network on its own (even temporarily wired) then you have another option.

Take the Laptop #1 off of the network and connect Laptop #2 directly...

Question about "The laptop he uses can connect to the homegroup, but he can't." The second "he" being the "new computer" - correct?

You may be confusing Home Group with Internet Connection Sharing as I read the last line of your second paragraph.

Google "How to set up a Home Group" and read or watch a few of the webstes explaining how to do it with respect to your Operating Systems.

Watch for any steps you may have overlooked or for any misconfigurations made in error.

You may need to undo some of what you have done so far and start over.

The laptop connects to our WiFi, and he connects to our laptop. The laptop uses Network Sharing to allow him to connect, and I'm 95% sure this is why it's not working. The network doesn't see his computer properly, or something along those lines.

I know how to setup a homegroup, I've done it many times before, I'd just like to know how to get him onto a homegroup when he doesn't have direct access like any other normal computer setup.

Take the Laptop #1 off of the network and connect Laptop #2 directly with an ethernet cable to create an ad hoc network between the two laptops. Many tutorials and videos on the internet.

Once you have established the ad hoc network you can transfer the files between the laptops.
