Hello Everyone,

I have an AMD 7870 (Gigabyte Ghz edition) in my rig and as of 3 hours ago there's a problem with it.

Earlier than 3 hours ago today I got a graphics crash when I tried recording something with OBS Studio for the first time (Trying to switch from OBS to Studio) saying something about a string in the driver (I might have paid closer attention if I knew I was going to end up here).
I tried to get higher quality recording/not streaming settings and played around with the encoder setting. When I tried it I got 4 minutes into my recording and it crashed. I think it was the encoder settings, The program won't run now due "Failed to initialize video" so I can't check.
I changed things back and got the recording done.

Later in the day I went on to stream (with OBS, not studio) for another 1.5 hours when the screen went nice and blue (But not the BSoD, it had wide vertical stripes) and I had to restart the computer to . . . no screen.
I could see the BIOS start, but then nothing. Computer still purred along.
Restarted and tried getting into safe mode (which under win10 doesn't have anything to do with F8 anymore I learned) where I was able to check the status of the drivers.
It hadn't auto-updated to the hotfix of 3 days ago. Drivers were from July (Crimson 16.3.2)

No viruses according to Avira

I couldn't uninstall the drivers. "Please contact AMD"
So I used DDU to get rid of them.
As soon as that was done I could access my computer on non-safe mode. I have a microsoft Basic Display adapter now.
Now I can't install drivers. Every time I do (Latest drivers, previously stable drivers and even a couple of older ones I still had in my download folder) it goes through the install cycle, and then it turns the screen black.

I am still projecting through the GPU DVI port, I haven't had to revert to on-board.
But it's 1024 * 768
And I've got 2 vertical bands where colours are . . . off. Different colour when it's a single colour and glitchy when not (http://imgur.com/a/rDPr3)

So, tl;dr

  • AMD 7870 crashed/broke.
Possibly due to OBS Studio or user error of such program.
    Can't install drivers anymore.

Please diagnose/help

have you turned the power off on the pc and pulled power from the wall...drained the mb then try and reseat the gpu to see if it was not seated. also gone to amd web page downloaded there newest chipset drivers for your mb chipset?? could be a damaged driver. check your power supply 12v output in the bios is it 12cv or is it lower..if it at 11.7v it can cause issues with gpu.

I have turned the power off and opened up the case.
Didn't take it out and re-seated it. But I did try to see if it was loose and made sure it was in there properly.

I did get the latest drivers. The hotfix one, the full one and the minimum one. All 3 produce the black screen.

I have not checked the PSU output. Nor do I have a Volt meter.

Alright, now I can't boot in non-safe mode anymore.
I hear the jingle that's supposed to come together with the login screen, but the screen is black. Nothing is shown after the ASRock logo.

I'm on iGPU output and haven't tried GPU output.

I restarted because the screens went black on its own after . . . a certain time period

Removal and re-seating did not result in a stable bootable system.

Removal of GPU results in a stable bootable system (although let's see if that lasts)

That leads me pretty heavily in the "GPU dead" catagory, although I'd love to hear other people chime in.

And maybe an explanation for why my system doesnt' boot if I tell my BIOS to use iGPU and ignore the 7870
