My son is in 4-H and he is to build a computer for the fair.

My budget is $400. If I go with this processor: Asus H170-PRO-CSM 2x

Where can I find the other parts and cut costs to stay within budget? (Is there a similar processor that costs less than 105?)

My son watches the youtube videos often of the guys who build them for $150. I do not have the expertise to do what they do...so keep that in mind.

Solution
you will not be able to build a PC with that board at $400. What is he planning on doing with it. I have put together a build here that can handle some light gaming, and would be fine for web surfing and such. You could get more performance, or bring the price down, but that would mean buying good used deals on ebay or craigslist. But then keep into consideration that you need a OS, weather thats a copy of windows for $100, or if you are able to get it somewhere else cheaper, or go with something like linux or react os. This is about the best you get for $400.

Solution
I wouldn't use that motherboard. With his budget, the board will eat up a significant amount of his budget leaving less money for other components. You can use www.PCPartPicker.com to create a system build. It will give you any compatibility issues and where the parts can be purchased at the lowest price. Here is a sample build:

Research the power supply you choose carefully. Some cheap PSU's can damage your other components.
