So I just noticed my Cpu, the i7 4790k, is running at 4.4ghz. I didnt do any overclocking to it. I just opened task manager and there it was 4.4ghz. The temperature is just around 35-40 degrees C. I have liquid cooling so its not that big of a deal if its running at 4.4ghz. But I just want to know why its running over the speeds listed for the cpu itself, especially if i didn't change anything.

specs:
MOTHERBOARD asus z97-a
CPU intel i7 4790k 4.0ghz
GPU evga 1080 gtx ftw
RAM 32g 1600 ddr3

Solution
It will run at 4.4GHz when doing nothing because it turbos to 4.4GHz when only 1 or 2 cores are in use and 4.3GHz when 3 cores are in use and 4.2GHz at full utilization. Those are the turbo speeds of the 4790K. Now if you would rather it not run that high when it's idle you can change your power plan to balanced and it should downclock unless you messed with the power settings of the cpu in the bios.
