Hello there. The USB 2.0 ports on my laptop and my external hard drive do not work after I connected a powered USB hub of 1000 milliamps and 4.5 volts to both. I reinstalled the drivers of them but it doesn't work. How do I solve it? It could be a hardware or software trouble? Thank you for your attention and help.

Hi there carlosrafa,
If the information stored on the drive is important, you can use the services of that professional and change it in order to retrieve the data.
If the board is in a good condition and if the drive is not damaged(platters, mechanics, etc.), then there's a chance that the drive would last.

If you don't need the information on the drive, probably it would be a better idea to get a new drive. (instead of investing in PCB swap)

Hi there carlosrafa,

That is really unpleasant.

You need to figure out whether there's something wrong with the ports or the drive itself.
You can:
- Attach the drive with a different cable to another computer. Is it powering up at all?
- Attach another drive to one of the USB ports. See if any other USB devices would work. In case they won't, then it may be a good idea to contact the manufacturer or a repair shop.

Cheers,

Thanks. I did what you told. I attached the external hard disk drive to another PC, but it didn't power up. not even turn on the led, and I attached another drive (a flash memory) to the USB port, but it didn't work. Now I have some questions. If the problem is about hardware; Can the USB ports of the laptop be changed? and Can the external hard drive be fixed by changing some piece, to say what acts as the USB port? Thank you for your help.

I brought my laptop and external HDD to a repair shop. The USB ports could be repaired by changing a small chip that control the USB ports, according what the technician told me. But the external HDD could not be repaired. The technician said that the board was very damaged and could only be changed by another with the only purpose of removing the information, but that would not last. Now I ask: Is it possible to fix the HDD? I will appreciate any help.

D_Know_WD,
Hi and thank you very much indeed for your informative answers. I will continue investigating about it. By the way, What is PCB?
