I am building an HTPC no gaming and Have nothing on my hardware list yet But I don't know if I should get an APU which does CPU and GPU task or if I should get both and split the task or if I can rely on only a CPU
Apu is amd's term and with the age and performance, I wouldn't use an apu. At least not til I see what zen does. Since there is no gaming anyways, it's not like you need a better igpu or gpu. You're other thread mentioned z170 but you won't need that nor need to spend more since you can finder cheaper chipsets. Maybe you should make a thread filling this out. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/353572-31-build-upgrade-advice
Pretty much any apu as long as it isn't one of the super cheap ones will be able to handle HTPC tasks. Since You said you won't game on it I would just get an apu.
