So any i3 processor with a LGA1151 motherboard would be better and work better? (for gaming mainly)

absolutely, games don't use more than 2/4 cores in any case. for gaming get the best cores. because the other cores will rarely/not be used for gaming.
2/4 really good cores are better than 6/8 so so cores for gaming.
the i3 being the really good cores.

This may be a bit of a dumb question, but as I am new to this whole thing you'll have to bear with me, because it's an i3 does that mean that it won't perform as well as a i5 or i7? Or does that not matter? Thank you :)

I will oversimplify for you
an i3 is half of an i5, the i3 has hyper-threading - 2 actual cores, 4 threads
an i5 is an i7 without hyper-threading - 4 actual cores, 4 threads
an i7 is the whole magilla, 4 cores with hyper-threading- 4 actual cores, 8 threads
hyper-threading is not as fast as an actual core but there is a marked benefit

Right, so would it be worth buying a i5 instead of an i3 or is there not much difference?

depends on the price.
the performance difference between an i3-6100 and an i5-6500 is minimal if you can get the 6500 for a minimal price difference then by all means do. but if the price is too much you are not paying for performance but a name.
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-6500-vs-Intel-Core-i3-6100/3513vs3511
i5-6500 is 204 at newegg. i3 6100 is 120 - the 80 bucks is not worth it to me and my budget for the 16-20% performance

Depends highly on the game.
In Benchmarks the difference between an i3-6300 and an i7-6700k is sometimes less than 10 fps, sometiems much more. Games that use 1-2 cores the i3 is sometimes Even better than a weaker i5.
For games that use more cores, like everything that uses Frostbite or cryengine engine an i5/i7 will outperform an i3

So if I wanted to run AAA games well I would be better off getting a decent i5 as the majority of these games use the cores? Is this correct?

yes
as I said earlier in the thread get the best cores you can for gaming.
I said I would not due to my budget, your is different but the advice of getting the best cores is true.
4 actual cores is better than 2 cores with HT.

Would a i5 4690k be a good choice? And is there anything like that, just slightly cheaper, as it's quite expensive.

Would the 6xxx series be worth looking at?

Sorry about the delay in replying to this, I thought I had email notifications enabled but I didn't.

the 6600k is the replacement for the 4690k. 5-10% increase in performance.
flip a coin between those. which can you get cheapest? (motherboard, ram and chip)

Gone are the days when the old system was half as fast as the new one. my first CPU was 166mhz, my second was 450mhz, my 955 black (7 yrs old) is still a decent performer, but my next chip will not be even 80% faster or 60% than what I have now (at same price @125$) it will be more efficient but not twice the speed.

The Intel 4000series is generally not rly worth it for a new build unless you already own a lga1150 Mainboard or a fancy Large RAM kit.
1151/6th Gen. Intel is the Way to go

@R1: gamingwise an i5 is about twice as fast as a 955BE.
Upgraded a month ago, drastic difference!!

So I would be better off buying a older i5 than a new one as there isn't that much performance difference? Would a i5 6600 work good with AAA games or is the £170 not worth it? Thanks for all the help and info guys, btw.

Ah I didn't see this (was replying to R_1's post) so a 6xxx series would be a good choice?

we all agree the 6xxx is the current chip.
which can be had for the least money?
the performance difference is @ 10% if the older platform (RAM CPU and Mobo) is 30% cheaper then that would be the way to go. IMHO
if the price savings is 8% get the newer one.

On Amazon and Newegg the i5 6xxx's are between £160-£200, so that's the CPU that I should try to get? Would the i5 6500 be a good one to get? Money and performance wise? (£180-ish)

Usually the Chips cost around the same, the boards are cheaper for older tech but don't have the features newer boards bring (M.2 support, more USB ports, USB 3.1, HDMI 2, and if course DDR4 support for DDR 4-RAM)
So if it ain't SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper I advise against going for outdated tech especially since there was the change from DDR 3 to 4

So spending £100 on a motherboard is ok? As long as it has the same socket as the processor, right?
