Solution
I'd go (and did go) with the Asus Z170 Hero, great mobo, (mine in sig). Have done numerous client builds on the Asus Pro Gaming also which is another great mobo, (clients all love it) ;)

If you're not into LED's and similar bling, you might look at the ASUS Z170-WS. It's hard to find if you use the board finder at the ASUS site, as it's neither in the gaming nor commercial lists, but google should find it. It's pricey, but has M.2 and U.2 connections, and a PCIe bridge that lets it support up to four GPU's, and if I recall you can do 6 SATA ports while still doing at least one of the U.2 or M.2 connections. Reportedly much higher than normal reliability components, lots of fan headers.

I stumbled across it, and as I was looking primarily for reliability and stability, the reviews describing the heavy duty components appealed. Worth a look. Not cheap. And not flashy (I wanted a near silent photo editing station with lots of storage), but works well.
